Do you think schools should have more or less rule?

=> I feel this is a comment that would entirely depend on the establishment of the pupils. Some people say that rules are meant to be broken. I would completely disagree however. One idea I have is that if students behave well and are fulfilling their teacher’s expectations in every aspect, then certain rules can be lifted. For example, they would get an extra 15 minutes of lunch time, which is quite common in Western countries.

Should schools ask students opinion before creating rules?

=> I am in a lot of schools I know, there are class mentors and also union/ year representatives. These students are allocated the tasks of digging for what the students do and don’t want. There are meetings in which suggestions are put forward to higher member of staff and discussed as a group. I believe this is good for morale of the students as they feel their voice is being heard, also for the year representatives as they are given a sense of responsibility.

  2. Morale - the amount of confidence felt by a person or group of people, especially when in a dangerous or difficult situation- tinh thần/ nhuệ khí

Example: A couple of victories would improve the team's morale enormously.- Một vài chiến thắng sẽ cải thiện tinh thần của đội rất nhiều.

Example: There have been a lot of job losses recently so morale is fairly low.- Đã có rất nhiều công việc mất mát gần đây nên tinh thần là khá thấp.

  1. Feel their voice is being heard - cảm thấy tiếng nói của họ được nghe
  2. A sense of responsibility - có tinh thần trách nhiệm

What is the importance of rules in the workplace?

One obvious example of the importance of rules would be on a construction site. The implementation of rules and regulations are crucial to maintain a safe environment for everybody. Even down to minute details such as making sure everybody has the correct training (which needs to be signed as well) in using certain tools and equipment. On the other hand, in another environment, rules are less important. An example is in an office situation where there is a no eating rule. If someone breaks the rules, it’s not the end of the world and safety isn’t at risk. So, it all depends on the circumstances really.

  6. The documentary showed an eye operation in minute detail (= showing every small detail).- Các tài liệu cho thấy một ca phẫu thuật mắt cực chi tiết  (= hiển thị từng chi tiết nhỏ).
  7. Minute details - tỉ mỉ đến từng chi tiết
  8. Have the correct training - có sự đào tạo đúng đắn
  9. Certain tools and equipment - 1 số công cụ và thiết bị nhất định
  10. On the other hand - mặt khác mà nói thì
  11. Less important - ít quan trọng hơn
  12. In an office situation - trong tình huống văn phòng
  13. Break the rules - phá vỡ luật
  14. Not the end of the world = not the worst thing that could happen- cũng không phải là điều tệ nhất / không phải là tận thế của thế giới (ý nói không quá nghiêm trọng)

Example: We’re hoping to win, but if we finish second it won’t be the end of the world.- Chúng tôi hy vọng sẽ giành chiến thắng, nhưng nếu chúng ta hoàn thành thứ hạng hai, đó sẽ không phải là kết thúc của thế giới.

Are uniforms necessary for all jobs?

=> Again, this is dependent on the workplace, however, generally speaking, uniforms do create a sense of unity between colleagues. It looks smart and professional and also ensures there is no discrimination. On top of that, uniform helps any organisation shows its meaningful core value to customers. One workplace where uniform is essential would be on a constructions site. As I briefly mentioned before, the safety is crucial and can’t be compromised because someone doesn’t like wearing a hard hat or steel cap boots.

  9. Compromise - an agreement in an argument in which the people involved reduce their demands or change their opinion in order to agree- thoả hiệp

Example: In a compromise between management and unions, a four percent pay rise was agreed in return for an increase in productivity.- Trong một thỏa hiệp giữa quản lý và công đoàn, tăng lương bốn phần trăm đã được đồng ý để đổi lấy sự gia tăng năng suất.
