Part 1: Frequent questions and answers

  1. Do you like giving or receiving gifts?
  • I like being given something. It’s exciting to unwrap a present and see what it is. Also it shows that someone cares about you. Or maybe it just means that they want something in return!
  • I prefer to give rather than receive. I love the look on someone’s face when they open a present. I also like to make things for people. I think it’s more meaningful than just buying something in a store.
  • I like both. It’s nice to get something, especially something that you want, or if the gift is from someone that you like. But, I really like to give people things as well. It doesn’t have to be anything big or cost a lot of money. I just really like to see their reaction when they open it.

  1. Do you often give gifts to people?
  • I’m afraid not. I’m not as generous as I should be, and I’m rather tight-fisted when it comes to I usually give gifts only on birthdays.
  • Yes, I really love giving people gifts as I feel happy when they are thankful and it is such a good feeling. Even something small pleases the one to whom I give.

  1. Do you ever take a gift when you visit someone in their home? [Why? Why not?]
  • Yes, sometimes, but it's a little different, maybe I would take something like some flowers for my grandmother or if it's a friend's house then maybe a bottle of wine or something like that. I think it's nice to show your appreciation for the invitation or in the case of my grandmother, I know that she loves flowers so they always make her happy - which is great. The type of giftwould depend a lot on why I was visiting; maybe a dinner invitation or just to call round and see a friend. I suppose it's considered normal when it's a social invitation but I certainly don't always show up with a gift on every occasion.

  1. What was the last gift you received?
  • My girlfriend gave me a watch a few weeks ago because she thought I’d like it. It’s a lovely watch, but the thought counts even more. I was very touched by her thoughtfulness.
  • Ok, this is funny; just a couple of days ago I received a bag of potatoes from the owner of the store at the corner of my street. Not exactly your usual 'gift' and I still don't know why he did it, but he just gave them to me and said not to worry about paying for them. It was a complete surprise, but a really nice gesture by him.

  1. What kind of gifts do you prefer?
  • I like to get things that I can use – I mean things that are practical. It might be kind of boring, but I like to get things like socks and underwear because I always need those and I don’t like shopping for those things!
  • I really appreciate something that I know the person giving it to me has put in a lot of thought into it. Maybe they remembered something that I mentioned liking and then a long time after that they see something like it and buy it more me. The cost doesn’t matter. It’s the thought that counts.

Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a gift that you presented

     You should say:

  • What the gift was
  • What the occasion was
  • Whom you gave it to
  • Why this gift was very special

Sample Answer:

My youngest brother was getting married and I wanted to give him a special gift.  A couple of days before the marriage my wife and I went to Ernakulam for some shopping.  As we were about to return we just went to my favourite store, ‘Wills Life Store’.  In fact, this particular shop has the trendiest and the most fashionable clothes for both men and women.  I had the gift in my mind when I went into the shop.  After spending a few minutes in the store I spotted an off-white linen casual shirt.  It was a designer wear and I put it on, to see how it looked.  My wife said, it was one of the best shirt that I had ever bought.  I was very happy.  It was an expensive shirt but it gave me a great sense of satisfaction.

On the eve of the wedding we had a party and my brother put this shirt on.  Everybody was very appreciative of the shirt and my brother was very happy about it.

This gift was very special to me because I really liked the colour, material and the design of the shirt.  Apart from that, it was first gift that I ever presented to my youngest brother.  I was extremely happy that he really liked the shirt.  It was the right occasion that I gave him this present.

Part 3: Details Discussion

  1. Do you think that present giving will play an important role in daily life? Why?

It seems to me that this is a bit ambiguous. More precisely, present giving is something that occurs in special events, for example, at birthdays, festivals, anniversaries, wedding, graduation day, on name days, when someone visits others and so on. I don't think that there are many people around the world who give presents to their loved ones or to friends on a daily basis. Furthermore, with regards to the future, I am of the opinion that giving gifts won't have a special role in everyday life either because, as I said earlier, presents are given when something important happens. However, there is no doubt that present giving plays an important role in our relationship and that will always remain the same.

                 ambiguous (a): mơ hồ

  1. Compare the gift which people have received 10 years ago to the present that people now are receiving? What's the difference between them?

To answer this question we have to go back to the past and think of the types of presents we gave and received. Despite my young age, I have some memories of such presents that my family and relatives gave me. I would say that in the past, specifically 10 years ago, the types of gifts exchanged were primarily clothes, toys, household appliances and books. Apart from the fact that they weren't related to technology, they were also significantly important, educational and in most cases really expensive. Nowadays, presents are more of symbolic rather than substantial or useful. People these days often give and receive technology related gifts which were quite rare in the past. To illustrate, the important presents that I received on my last birthday were perfumes and a laptop. Of course, gifts items in all decades do not remain the same. It will change for sure after ten years. The love and good wishes behind a gift are more important that the item itself.

  1. What are the positive/negative aspects of giving and receiving gifts?

Giving and receiving gifts have both advantages and disadvantages.  On the one hand, it is an expression of one’s love or appreciation for someone.  It can strengthen relationships.  It can also create a good feeling in the minds of people.

On the other hand, giving and receiving today has become a commercial activity.  Sometimes we are forced give and receive gifts.  A lot of time and money is involved in buying gifts.  For example, if someone calls you for a birthday, you are compelled to give a gift.  Sometimes, it can become a burden on your budget.

  1. What are the different types of gifts that women, men and childrenwould like to receive?

Women are usually fond of ornaments and clothes. They also like to receive household appliances and handicrafts.  For special occasions like birthdays they receive a lot of such gifts.

Children are usually attracted to toys and dolls.  They love chocolates and sweets too.
