  1. SPEAKING QUESTION

Part 1

  1. What do you think of happiness?

In my humble opinion, happiness isn’t achieving certain goals. Surely it’s important to accomplish what you yearn for but that’s not eternal happiness for me. happiness a journey that I undertake in the pursuit of my goals.

  1. What do you like to do when you are happy?

I’d like to share my success and feeling with my family or friends when I’m happy. I believe that my happiness can’t go without them.

  1. What kinds of things make you happy?

There are many things that can make me happy, for example, taking a 30-minute walk outside can help me let off steam and I won’t feel any depressed, or buying lots of things online can deliver me even more happiness because it enables me feel that I save a great amount of money.

  1. What kinds of things do Vietnamese people feel happy about?

It’s kind of hard to say but people that I know around me tend to feel happy about earning more money, but maybe for others, they would feel happy when their children get into the good universities.

  1. Is it easy to be happy for you?

Well, I’m afraid that as an adult, I’m too stressful to be happy. I have to find a good job and get a decent pay to feed myself and family, so I have to admit that there are less and less things that make me really happy.

Part 2

DESCRIBE AN EVENT OR ACTIVITY THAT HAS MADE YOU HAPPY

What this event or activity is

How often you have participated in this event or activity

Whether you would do it more often if you could

Explain how your life has been enriched by this event or activity

I'd like to tell you about an activity that has made me happy. And I could do it more if I had less work to do. That's hiking. I haven't had many chances to take part in such amazing activity, so up to now, I've hiked 3 times: one time in 2000 up to the Fansipan, Sapa (I actually couldn't make it to the peak of that more than 3000m mountain); another time in 2012 in Tay Ninh when I did hike to the pagoda on the mountain rather than taking the cable car, and the last time in 2013 when I was on a fieldtrip with my students. The more I hike, the more I learn. Hiking is an incredible activity for me untill now. I really enjoy the breath-taking view when I go up to the summit of the mountain, you know, when I look down to the plain and look up to the sky, I find myself in between. You will have the feeling of a victory, feeling like you break a new record. Though getting a little tired for not practicing enough, hiking has taught me so many things about myself. I felt I was strong and young when I was at the middle way up to Fansipan. Or I thought I was a champion when I was at the peak of 1000m above the sea level in Da Lat. I think in general, hiking teaches me how to be happy, to feel great, and to be independent, like I've found time after time I could overcome a challenge. And so for me, hike is not only for fun, but mainly for seeing how I can achieve the next goal. And each time of hiking, to me, is a trophy. I've had 3 trophies though.

Part 3

1.What do you think 'happiness' is?

Well, in simple terms, I guess I’d say it’s a feeling that we get when we’re content with something, for example when we’re doing something we enjoy.

2.What are some things that make you happy?

Let me have a little think…um… well, first of all, what always makes me happy is seeing my friends and family happy, which I suppose is probably the same for everyone. And as well as that, I’d say just doing the things I enjoy always puts me in a happy mood, you know, like playing the piano, and going to KTV with my friends.

  1. Do you think people who have more talent are happier than others?

No I wouldn’t say they are. I mean, there are countless examples of famous singers and actors who were extremely talented, but for some reason turned to things like drugs or alcohol in order to escape the depression they felt. And on the other end of the scale, there are people with seemingly very little talent, but who are very happy and content with their life. So for me I’d say happiness bears no relation at all to the amount of talent a person has.

bears no relation at all = bears little relation to..

  1. Do you think money makes people happy?

Yeah, I suppose it does. You know, I think it’s fair to say that money makes us all feel happy to some degree, because you can do so much with it, like buy new clothes or go on holiday or whatever. But saying that, I’d say it’s only a kind of short-term happiness that we get from money, because the feeling soon fades, as I’m sure you’ll agree! So I think if we want to enjoy long-term happiness, then it’s really other things that bring about it, like appreciating what we already have in life.

  1. Are the things that make people happy today the same as several decades ago?

I guess the answer would have to be yes and no. Yes, because there are things like helping others which have always made people feel happy and will always continue to do so. And no, because people nowadays have generally become more materialistic, which is a reflection of the society we now live in. So a lot of happiness now comes from acquiring material goods and possessions, like houses and cars, which wasn’t so much the case several decades ago.

  1. Why do people feel happy when they are with members of their family?

Well I suppose the reason is simply that our family are people we love and feel close to, so it’s natural that being with them will make us feel happy. I guess that’s all there is to it!

That’s (really) all there is to it = That’s all

  1. In general, what do you think makes a happy family?

That’s a good question, and thinking about it, I would say it’s basically just showing love, support and appreciation to one another.  So in other words, I think it’s not enough for us to just love our family members, but also show it, and by doing this we will be able to create happiness within the family. For example, you know, if a child does badly in a school exam, their parents should encourage and support them, as opposed to telling them off, and if they do well or win a prize, then their parents should show how proud they are. And in this way, I think the family will definitely be a happy one!
