Why do people like to collect different items? 

I’m not really sure because to be honest the idea doesn’t float my boat. But I guess it’s an easy hobby, which doesn’t require much practise or skill. You can devote a small amount of time to collecting things and still find it to be an exciting and rewarding pastime. Perhaps, it’s especially well-suited for old people, who have a lot of time on their hands and yearn for an enjoyable, if slightly futile, way to pass their days.

What things do people like to collect? 

People collect all kinds of things, from expensive high-end art and records, to pokemon cards and memorabilia from TV shows. There’s seemingly no limit to what people will collect. Stamp collecting is perhaps the oldest and most well known example, and is still popular even today. But personally, I think the most interesting collectable items are the ones that can actually be used. That’s why if I was going to start collecting anything it probably be music, books, or magazines. These are items that can be enjoyed in isolation and serve a purpose, rather than something that is just purchased to be part of a collection.

Where can people find interesting things to add to their collection?

Well it depends greatly on what they are collecting. If people are collecting classic comic books, then of course they should check out their nearest comic book store. If they’re into antique furniture then auction houses are probably their best bet. As a general rule, thrift stores and flea markets are great places to search for collectable items, especially if you’re after a bargain.

Example: Do-it-yourself is the nation's most popular pastime.

  1. Suited adjective/ˈsuː.tɪd/: right for someone or something: phù hợp

Example: With her qualifications and experience, she would seem to be ideally suited to/for the job.

  1. Futile adjective /ˈfjuː.taɪl/: (of actions) having no effect or achieving nothing: vô ích 

Example: Attempts to get supplies to the region are futile because troops will not allow the aid convoy to enter the city. (Nỗ lực để có được nguồn cung cấp cho khu vực là vô ích vì quân đội sẽ không cho phép đoàn xe viện trợ vào thành phố.)

  1. Memorabilia noun /ˌmem.ər.əˈbɪl.i.ə/: objects that are collected because they are connected with a person or event that is thought to be very interesting

Example: an auction of pop memorabilia (một cuộc đấu giá của kỷ niệm nhạc pop)

  1. Collectable noun /kəˈlek.tə.bəl/: any object that people want to collect as a hobby
  2. isolation noun /ˌaɪ.səlˈeɪ.ʃən/: the condition of being alone, especially when this makes you feel unhappy: sự tách biệt

Example: The prisoner had been kept in isolation for three days.

  1. Antique noun /ænˈtiːk/: something made in an earlier period that is collected and considered to have value because it is beautiful, rare, old, or of high quality: đồ cổ 

Example: You can't give away Granny's old bookcase - it's a valuable antique.

  1. auction house noun /ˈɔːk.ʃən ˌhaʊs/: a company whose business is selling thingsat auction: nhà đấu giá
  2. auction noun /ˈɔːk.ʃən/: a usually public sale of goods or property, where people make higher and higher bids (= offers of money) for each thing, until the thing is sold to the person who will pay most: cuộc đấu giá

Example: They’re holding an auction of jewellery on Thursday. (Họ đã tổ chức một cuộc đấu giá đồ trang sức vào thứ năm.)

  1. Thrift noun /θrɪft/: the careful use of money, especially by avoiding waste
  2. flea market noun /ˈfliː ˌmɑː.kɪt/: a market, usually taking place outside, where old or used goods are sold cheaply: chợ đen
  3. bargain noun /ˈbɑː.ɡɪn/: something on sale at a lower price than its true value: món hời

Example: This coat was half-price - a real bargain.
