Everybody has childhood memories and among them some are pleasant and some are sad. For me, I suppose my childhood time very magical and pleasant when I remember laughing a lot and spending lots of time together with my family, in spite of many ups and downs in the prime of my life that I didn’t realise.

Đối với tôi, tôi cho rằng thời gian tuổi thơ của tôi rất huyền diệu và dễ chịu khi tôi nhớ tôi cười rất nhiều và dành rất nhiều thời gian cho gia đình, mặc cho có nhiều thăng trầm trong những năm đầu đời cuộc sống của tôi mà tôi đã không nhận ra.

2. What part of your childhood do you remember most?

I have various childhood memories and I daresay that I would like to hang on to old memory related to my school time, exactly my first day at school. In my very first imagination, school would be a great time and I would have lots of friends and I would study there. However, I turned out to be frightened for few moments and sat at a corner of the class. I was so reserved that I was unable to introduce myself when asked.
➡ Tôi có vài kỷ niệm thời thơ ấu khác nhau và tôi dám nói rằng tôi muốn suy nghĩ về những kỷ niệm thời đi học, chính xác là ngày đầu tiên của tôi ở trường. Trong trí tưởng tượng đầu tiên của tôi, trường học sẽ là nơi tuyệt vời và tôi sẽ có rất nhiều bạn bè và tôi sẽ học tập ở đó. Tuy nhiên, hóa ra tôi lại lo sợ cho vài phút và ngồi vào một góc của lớp. Tôi đã rất nhút nhát đến nỗi mà tôi không thể giới thiệu bản thân mình khi được hỏi.

3. What make a happy childhood?

Well, for me, it was totally feeling loved with family, relatives and friends such as plenty of opportunities to play with other children during the long hot summers or getting out and about even if it was just in the garden with your family. i didn’t see much of my father when I was very young as he worked nights and shifts but I have fond memories of sitting with him while he had his tea at 8.00 pm.
➡ Với tôi, đó hoàn toàn là cảm giác được yêu bởi gia đình, người thân và bạn bè vi dụ như chơi với mấy đứa trong mùa hè nóng dài hay lượn lờ thậm chí là ngoài vườn với gia đình. Tôi đã không gặp cha tôi nhiều khi tôi còn bé vì ông ấy làm việc ngày đêm nhưng tôi vẫn có những kỷ niệm ngồi bên ông ấy trong lúc uống trà lúc 08:00.

4. What would you like to change about your childhood?

I guess I grew up "on the tracks". There were some families "on the other side of the tracks". In reality we were lower middle class, failing somewhat to fit in with upper middle, but not as bad off as those families just a few blocks away. It would have been nice to have a bit more money, but as an adult, I'm not sure it would have been that good for me to fit in. I still feel proud of my puerility and there shouldn’t have any change about my childhood.
➡ Tôi cho rằng môi trường mình lớn lên là tốt rồi. Có một số gia đình nghèo lắm. Thực tế chúng tôi là tầng lớp trung lưu thấp, có một chút không phù hợp một chút với trung lưu trên, nhưng không phải là nghèo như những gia đình gần đó. Sẽ tốt hơn nếu chúng tôi có cuộc sống khá giả hơn chút, nhưng khi lớn lên tôi không nghĩ điều đó tốt cho tôi. Tôi vẫn cảm thấy tự hào về thời trẻ của mình và không nên có bất kỳ sự thay đổi nào đối với tuổi thơ ấy.

PART 2: Describe a childhood song you remember well.

You should say:

where you first heard this song
how old you were when you first heard it
what is was about
and explain how you feel now when you hear this song.

Talking about songs, I have way too many good ones to mention. However, if you ask about my childhood favorite there’s only one called “Que Huong” – which can broadly be understood in English as “My Country”.

This song used to be the lullaby not only for me but all the kids in my village. If my memory doesn’t fail me, I believe my mother first sang it to me when I was 2 or 3 years of age. It could be long before that, I can’t say for sure.

When I was a child, mom used this song to soothe and send me to sleep. I begged her to do that every night not only because she could sing it beautifully in harmony but also because of the familiar images that appeared in my innocent mind at that time. Even now, her voice and the tune sometimes echo in my head.

“My Country” describes the peaceful life in the countryside of Vietnam. It was actually a poem, which was modified and set to tune by a Vietnamese composer. This song portrays earnestly and beautifully everything about Vietnam countryside: the fruits orchards, the full moon night, the monkey bridge, etc. and what I particularly love is the way the author compared Vietnam with a devoted mother whom we always miss and want to rush back whenever we’re away from.

As a little girl, I loved it because of the familiarities. Now as an adult, I partially understand the reason why it’s still one of my favorites. It was all about my mom, her voice was so smooth and soothing. No matter what happened during the day, she always put everything at ease and put me to sleep.

Sometimes on the street, I suddenly heard the song and all the good old days and memories flooded back. Once in a while, I do listen to it myself, especially when I miss my mother.
