Càng học sâu tiếng Anh, bạn sẽ thấy có vô vàn từ mang những nét nghĩa tương tự nhau, gây khó khăn thực sự trong việc phân biệt và sử dụng từ một cách đúng đắn (right contexts). Đừng lơ là với series context về CONFUSING WORDS mà BEC đã soạn sẵn dưới đây, bạn sẽ hiểu được ngọn ngành hơn. Nhiệm vụ của chúng ta là đọc thật kĩ và đưa ra ví dụ cho riêng mình nhé
1. Historic and Historical
- Historic (a) /hɪˈstɒr.ɪk/: important or likely to be important in history: quan trọng mang tính lịch sử; quan trọng trong lịch sử.
Example: historic buildings / a historic day/moment
- Historical (a) /hɪˈstɒr.ɪ.kəl/: connected with studying or representing things from the past: xảy ra trong lịch sử, trong quá khứ, liên quan đến môn lịch sử.
Example: Many important historical documents were destroyed when the library was bombed.
2. Continuous and Continual
- Continuous (a) /kənˈtɪn.ju.əs/: without a pause or interruption - liên tục
Example: My computer makes a continuous low buzzing noise.
- Continual (a) /kənˈtɪn.ju.əl/: happening repeatedly, usually in an annoying or not convenient way: lặp đi lặp lại nhiều lần, có sự gián đoạn ở giữa
Example: I’ve had continual problems with this car ever since I bought it.
3. Imaginative, Imaginary và Imaginable
- Imaginative (a) /ɪˈmædʒ.ɪ.nə.tɪv/: good at thinking of new, original, and clever ideas: sáng tạo
Example: Abed was an artist with imaginative ideas, but he often lacked the discipline to put them into practice.
- Imaginary (a) /ɪˈmædʒ.ɪ.nər.i/: Something that is imaginary is created by and exists only in the mind: trong tưởng tượng, không có thật
Example: As a child I had an imaginary friend.
- Imaginable (a) /ɪˈmædʒ·ə·nə·bəl/: possible, or able to be imagined: có thể tưởng tượng được
Example: They sell every flavor of ice cream imaginable.
4. Flammable và inflammable
Thoạt nhìn, chắc hẳn nhiều bạn sẽ nghĩ hai từ này mang nghĩa trái ngược nhau, vì từ inflammable mang tiền tố “in” thường mang nghĩa là không. Tuy nhiên, một điều thú vị ở đây là flammable và inflammable có cùng nét nghĩa là dễ cháy, dễ bắt lửa.
Example: inflammable/flammable material
5. Respectable and respectful
- Respectable (a) /rɪˈspek.tə.bəl/: considered to be socially acceptable because of your good character, appearance, or behaviour: đáng được kính trọng
Example: a respectable young woman from a good family
- Respectful (a) /rɪˈspekt.fəl/: showing admiration for someone or something: thể hiện sự tôn trọng, kính trọng với ai đó (qua cách ứng xử)
Example: ”We're so pleased to meet you at last," he said in a respectful tone of voice.
6. Remote and Rural
- Remote (a) /rɪˈməʊt/: A remote area, house, or village is a long way from any towns or cities: khu vực xa xôi, hẻo lánh
Example: a remote mountain village
- Rural (a) /ˈrʊə.rəl/: in, of, or like the countryside: nông thôn
Example: The area is still very rural and undeveloped.
