Khi càng tiếp xúc với phim ảnh hay nói chuyện với người bản ngữ bạn sẽ thấy có nhiều cụm từ mà mình chưa gặp trong sách vở bao giờ, ví dụ như cách nói ALL AND SUNDRY hàm ý là tất cả mọi người… và còn vô vàn các cụm hay ho chúng mình có liệt kê ở bên dưới. 1. Could do with sth = If something could do with something, it needs it very much: cần làm…. thêm rất nhiều…
Example: This place could do with a good cleaning.
2. In your face = shocking and annoying in a way that is difficult to ignore: ai nói/ làm cái đó theo một cách rất khiêu khích, thô lỗ, dụng ý là gây gổ với người kia/làm người kia tức giận.
Example: dance music that is aggressive, sexy, and in your face
3. At the time = at the particular point when something was thought of or done: vào thời điểm đó
Example: It seemed like a good idea at the time.
4. Jump in the bath: nhảy vào bồn tắm
Example: I’m just gonna jump in the bath.
5. I have to say = about to share honest statement: tôi phải chia sẻ thật là…
Example: I have to say the mea was not cooked to my liking.
6. The thing is/ The problem is….. vấn đề là…
Example: The thing is James just wants to have fun.
7. Twist your ankle: chẹo mắt cá chân
Example: I twisted my stupid ankle.
8. All and sundry = everyone: mọi người
Example: I’m fed up, I had to feed all and sundry this weekend.
9. First dibs on = choice of (something) before anyone else gets to pick: được chọn trước cả mọi người
Example: The farm always gives first dibs on its vegetables to local families.
10. The real world (n) /ˌrɪəl ˈwɜːld/: the set of situations most humans have to deal with in their lives, rather than what happens in stories, films
Example: real-world situations
11. Nut (v) /nʌt/: to hit someone or something with your head: đụng đầu ai….
Example: The guy turned round and nutted him.
12. Down the plughole = used to describe something that is being wasted or lost: đổ ra sông biển (không có kết quả)
Example: All my hard work went down the plughole.
