What kinds of books did you like to read when you were young?

Well, to be honest with you, I was never into textbooks at school (just like any other kids). What really excited me was comic books, in particular Japanese anime such as Doremon. You know, I love the vivid illustrationsand the exhilarating storylines. 

What’s your favourite kind of books? = What type of books do you read?

My interest in books has developed/ evolved tenfold. Now I have a particular liking for magic and adventure such as Harry Potter. Whereas before, this would never spark my intention.

Do you still keep these books?

Er… unfortunately no. After graduating school, my whole family did a big spring clean. I had to make up my mind on what to keep or what to put in the bin. In the end, I decided to let the Doremon legacy continue so I donated them to a local children hospital.

Yes, for sure. They mean so much to me sentimentally even though I don’t still read them today. When I see them on my shelves, some childhood memories come flooding back.

Have you ever given other books as gifts?

Yes, once in a while! I have many friends who are bookworms so we tend to buy each other books on a daily basis. For example, my friend - David is crazy about sci-fi so I have bought him several Star Wars books.

Vocabulary highlights:

  1. To be honest with you- thành thật mà chia sẻ với bạn thì….
  2. To be never into Noun/ Ving = Something does not tickle my fancy - chưa bao giờ thích cái gì đó…
  3. Tickle sb'sfancy = If something tickles your fancy, you like it and want to have it

Example: Does anything on the menu tickle your fancy?- có bất cứ cái gì ở trên menu này bạn thích không vậy?

  1. What really excited me was….. điều mà khiến tôi thực sự thích thú đó là…
  2. Anime - Japanese films made using characters and images that are drawn rather than real, or one of these films- hoạt hình Nhật Bản

Example: Until recently, anime had little more than a cult following outside Japan.- Cho đến gần đây, hoạt hình Nhật Bản có ít hơn một giáo phái bên ngoài Nhật Bản.

  1. Vivid illustrations - các sự minh hoạ phong phú
  2. Exhilarating storylines- cốt truyện tươi vui
  3. Exhilarating - making you feel very excited and happy

Example: an exhilarating walk in the mountains

  1. Unfortunately no- thật không may mắn là không ạ
  2. Do a big spring clean- dọn tổng thể/ tổng vệ sinh cả nhà…
  3. Spring-clean -to clean all of a place, especially your house, very well, including parts you do not often clean- dọn tổng thể

Example: Mrs Bridges seemed to have spring-cleaned the whole house.- Bà Bridges dường như đã dọn dẹp toàn bộ ngôi nhà.

Example: I’ve been spring-cleaning all day.

  1. Make up your mind = make your mind up = to decide
  2. Example: I haven't made up my mind where to go yet.- Tôi chưa quyết định sẽ đi đâu.
  3. Donate - to give moneyor goodsto help a person or organization - quyên góp

Example: An anonymous businesswoman donated one million dollars to the charity.- Một nữ doanh nhân giấu tên đã quyên góp một triệu đô la cho tổ chức từ thiện.

Example: Please donate generously.

  1. A local children hospital - 1bệnh viện địa phương
  2. Mean so much to me sentimentally - có ý nghĩa với tôi rất nhiều về mặt cảm xúc
  3. Sentimental- A sentimental person is strongly influenced by emotional feelings, especially about happy memories of past events or relationships with other people, rather than by careful thought and judgment based on facts- đa cảm/ giàu cảm xúc

Example: Why be sentimental about that old coat? There's no point in keeping it just because you were wearing it when you first met me.- Tại sao phải đa cảm về chiếc áo cũ đó? Không có lý do gì để giữ nó chỉ vì bạn đã mặc nó khi lần đầu tiên gặp tôi.

  1. Memories come flooding back - kí ức ùa về
  2. (every) once in a while= sometimes but not often

Example: We meet for lunch once in a while.- Thỉnh thoảng chúng tôi gặp nhau để ăn trưa.

  1. Bookworm = a personwho readsa lot - mọt sách
  2. On a daily basis = everyday = daily - hàng ngày
  3. To be crazy about Noun/Ving - phát cuồng về cái gì
  4. Sci-fi =  science fiction- khoa học viễn tưởng
  5. I have a particular liking for …. Tôi có sở thích đặc biệt đối với cái gì đó…..
  6. Never spark my intention- chưa bao giờ khiến tôi chú ý đến
  7. Spark - start a fire- hoả hoạn/ khơi gợi, khơi dậy

Example: Downed power lines sparked fires in several parts of town.- Các đường dây điện bị rơi đã gây ra hỏa hoạn ở một số khu vực của thị trấn.

Example: We try to find stories that will spark our students’ imaginations.- Chúng tôi cố gắng tìm những câu chuyện sẽ khơi dậy trí tưởng tượng của học sinh.
