IELTS SPEAKING PART 1 : Weather

What weather do you like? = what’s your favourite kind of weather?

Answer 1: I definitely prefer a cool and pleasant / mild climate (OR: Well, a cool and mild climate is definitely my cup of tea). This type of weather always uplifts my mood (or: promotes an uplifting mood). You know, I can show off my fashionable outfits with different layers and enjoy my favourite hot pot (or BBQ). 

Answer 2: What I love most is cool, dry weather. I am fanatical about being able to sit outside on a balmy evening with a drink, rather than cooped up inside like you are in the winter. (Reference: Speaking for IELTS - Karen Kovacs - Collins) 

Do you like rain? Why do / don’t you like rain?

Whether I like the rain or not is situation depending. If I am in a sluggish/ lazy mood and lounging around the house, I am content with the rain as it gives me a good excuse to read my favourite book. Whereas, if I had a prearranged plan which require a sunny day, I would feel very disappointed.

Have you ever postponed your plans because of rain?

Absolutely yes! I mean, who doesn’t? It just happened the other day, you know, when I was just about to go to the bookshop, then out of the blue, it started raining cats and dogs. So, I had no choice but to postpone my plan.

Would you like to live in a wet area or dry?

Of course, I would prefer to live in a predominantly dry area because I can do more outdoor activities, especially going to the beach. Without a doubt, life is so much better in the sun because sunshine makes me happy . 


Vocabulary highlights:

  1. A cool and pleasant / mild climate- khí mậu mát mẻ và dễ chịu/ ôn hoà
  2. Content - adjective /kənˈtent/ - pleased with your situation and not hoping for change or improvement- hài lòng với cái gì

Example: He seems fairly content with (his) life.- Anh ta có vẻ khá hài lòng với cuộc sống của mình.

Example: They’re content to socialize with a very small circle of people.- Họ hài lòng để hoà đồng với một nhóm người rất nhỏ.

  1. Uplifts my mood = cheer (sb)up — phrasal verb /tʃɪər/ - If someone cheers up, or something cheers someone up, they start to feel happier - làm đó đó vui vẻ, hạnh phúc lên (cổ vũ)

Example: She was sick so I sent her some flowers to cheer her up.- Cô ấy bị ốm nên tôi đã gửi cho cô ấy vài bông hoa để cổ vũ cô ấy.

Example: She went shopping to cheer herself up.- Cô đi mua sắm để cổ vũ bản thân.

  1. Show off (v) khoe khoang, chưng diện
  2. Fashionable outfits - các bộ cánh thời trang, thời thượng
  3. What I love most is ….. - điều mà tôi thích nhất là….
  4. To be fanatical about Ving = to be crazy about Ving - cực mê thích cái gì/ cuồng về cái gì
  5. Fanatical -adjective  /fəˈnæt.ɪ.kəl/ =  extremely interested in something, to a degree that some people find unreasonable - cực kì thích cái gì

Example: His dedication to fitness was almost fanatical.- Sự cống hiến của ông cho thể dục là gần như kiểu bị cuồng.

Example: Gary’s fanatical about football.- Gary phát cuồng về bóng đá.

  1. A balmy evening - 1 buổi tối mát mẻ
  2. Balmy - adjective /ˈbɑː.mi/ - (of weather) pleasantly warm

Example: a balmy summer evening- một buổi tối mùa hè mát mẻ

  1. Sluggish - adjective /ˈslʌɡ.ɪʃ/ - moving or operating more slowly than usual and with less energy or power- uể oải, mệt mỏi

Example: A heavy lunch makes me sluggish in the afternoon.- Một bữa trưa nặng nề khiến tôi uể oải vào buổi chiều.

  1. Something is wrong with the car- the engine feels sluggish.- Có gì đó không ổn với chiếc xe - động cơ có vẻ chậm chạp.
  2. The housing market has been very sluggish these past few years.- Thị trường nhà đất đã rất trì trệ trong vài năm qua.
  3. A good excuse - 1 lời bao biện tốt
  4. A prearranged plan- 1 kế hoạch trước
  5. Who doesn’t? - ai lại không chứ?
  6. The other day - 1 ngày nọ
  7. Out of the blue =If something happens out of the blue, it is completely unexpected = suddenly - đột nhiên, đôt ngột
  8. Example: One day, out of the blue, she announced that she was leaving. 
  9. Rain cats and dogs = to rain very heavily- mưa rất to, mưa như trút nước 
  10. Example: Don’t forget to take your umbrella - it's raining cats and dogsout there.
  11. A predominantly dry area- 1 khu vực đặc biệt khô ráo
  12. Without a doubt- không còn nghi ngờ gì nữa
