Miêu tả 1 lần mà bạn được nhận tiền như là 1 món quà  -  topic này cũng đang nằm trong bộ đề dự đoán của quý cuối năm 2018 cho phần thi speaking IELTS part 2 . Topic này rất hay - lại 1 lần nữa là đề trải nghiệm nên các bạn có thể nói theo trải nghiệm thật của mình hoặc có thể tha hồ bịa ra content sao cho thật, hay, chất và mới lạ để còn lấy điểm cao nhất. Lưu ý:  các bạn dùng idiom nào thì cũng make sure là mình dùng đúng văn cảnh. Với topic này mình hoàn toàn có thể bịa ra là mình dùng tiền được tặng 1 cách thông minh và có ích nè (spend money wisely) hoặc là LET YOUR HAIR DOWN.

This is indeed an interesting question because it reminds me of one of the most frequent asked questions from my foreign friends about giving money as a gift, which is not common in Western culture. (Or: which is unusual in Western culture).

Interestingly, it’s quite common in Vietnam and I have had several opportunities to receive money as a gift. The most memorable time was when I received money working as an English translator for a Chinese company.

I can vividly recall that it happened about 6 years ago. At that time, I was offered to translate about all the Ultrasound systems displayed in a store at Giang Vo Exhibition Centre. Without any hesitation, I received that job because they offered a pretty decent pay.

During this 2 wonderful days, I had a chance to get to know all the special terms about the modern Ultrasound system. I did my best to translate well and promote the company’s products. At the end of the event, my boss Mr Kim treated all the staff to a meal out at a fancy Korean restaurant. We had a whale of a time celebrating success of this event.

Surprisingly, my boss took me home on that day. He told me that he was so confused in choosing gifts for me so he decided to give me an envelope to show his great gratitude. I refused to receive it because I knew it was money inside. However, he insistently convinced me that it was his sincere present and I deserved to have it for my handwork and dedication so I eventually took it.

Opening the envelope, it was about 4 million VND which really surprised me. With some of this money, I threw a small party with my family. With the rest, I decided to have a short day trip to the Flamingo Dai Lai with my best friends to let my hair down. We had great fun there and have more travelling experience. So, I really felt proud of myself for using this gift so wisely.

You know if my boss gave me a product such as cosmetics, I would not have been able to spend quality time with my family and friends.  Until now, I have kept in contact closely with Mr Kim - the best boss that I have ever had and I am so thankful to know him in my life.

 

Vocabulary & Useful expressions:

  5. Unusual (a) /ʌnˈjuː.ʒu.əl/ : different from othersof the same type in a way that is surprising, interesting, or attractive ( khác thường, lạ)

Example: It’s unusual to have adult conversation like that with such a young child.

  1. Interestingly = used to  introduce  a  pieceof information that the speaker thinks is strange or interesting (thú vị thay)

Example: Interestingly (enough), he never actually said that he was innocent.

  10. Have a whale of a time = to enjoy yourself very much : có 1 thời gian cực kì vui vẻ/tuyệt/ hạnh phúc

Example: The restaurant turned out to be surprisingly cheap.

  1. Show his great gratitude: thể hiện sự biết ơn cực lớn của anh ấy
  2. A sincere present: 1 món quà chân thành
  3. Handwork and dedication: sự chăm chỉ và cống hiến tận tuỵ
  4. Eventually (adv) /ɪˈven.tʃu.ə.li/ :in the end, especiallyafter a long time or a lot of effort, problems, etc. ( cuối cùng thì)

Example: Although she had been ill for a long time, it still came as a shock when she eventually died.

( Mặc dù cô đã bị bệnh trong một thời gian dài, nó vẫn đến như một cú sốc khi cô cuối cùng đã chết)

Example: It might take him ages but he'll do it eventually.

( Nó có thể khiến anh ta già đi nhưng cuối cùng anh ta sẽ làm điều đó)

  1. Throw a small party: tổ 1 bữa tiệc nhỏ
  2. Let yourhair down= to be more relaxed than usual and enjoy yourself : nghỉ ngơi, giải trí (xoã)

Example: I like to let my hair down on the dance floor.

  1. Have more travelling experience: có thêm nhiều kinh nghiệm du lịch
  2. Feel proud of myself:cảm thấy bản thân thật tự hào
  3. Spend quality timewith my family and friends: dành thời gian quý báu với gia đình và bạn bè
