Do people in your country like to go to crowded places?
Well, I’d have to say that some people do and some people don’t. I think Vietnamese culture is very much focused on social activities and community, so for this reason, most people are comfortable surrounded by others. This is different to some other countries, such as Japan, where ideas of privacy and individualism are honored. In Vietnam, I think young people in particular love crowded places because of the buzzing energy and excitement.
What kind of places are crowded?
Most obviously, urban environments tend to be incredibly crowded (or: tend to be fully packed…) whereas rural areas are often sparsely populated. There are also specific occasions that draw large crowds such as music festivals, political rallies and sports events. For example, when Vietnam’s national football team win a match, people flood the streets of cities to celebrate the victory in massive crowds. Another classic case of a crowded place would be pagodas during the days surrounding the lunar new year. At this time throngs of people visit holy places in order to pay their respects and pray for good fortune in the coming year.
Why do some people not like to go to crowded places?
I think many people find crowded places to be stressful and irritating, especially elderly people who tend to prefer quiet and relaxing places. Other people suffer from claustrophobia, and feel easily panicked when they are packed tightly in a crowd. Densely populous places are also a hotbed for pickpockets and other petty criminals, so some people understandably want to stay away from places they believe are dangerous.
Why is it said that large cities tend to lose the feeling of community?
I think there are several reasons/ Well, obviously there are a number of possible explanations. For one thing, cities generally have a younger population than suburban and rural areas, and young people are less concerned with creating communities and more individually focused. As well as this, there are simply too many people living in one neighborhood for everyone to get to know each other, and the pace of life in cities is so fast that no one has time to make small talk with each other. Perhaps, local city governments should make more of an effort to promote community social events and projects, but it’s easier said than done.
