What is the best age for children to begin computer lessons?
I think the ideal age to start mandatory computer lessons would be when they begin secondary school at around the age of 11 or 12. Prior to this, most kids are not really into computers anyway and I think introducing them to technology at a very young age (= very early on) could hinder their progression in other areas such as physical ability and social development. Having said this though, some children are obsessed with technology and computers from a very young age and so I think in these instances, it’s best to encourage them to pursue their interests at whatever age they happen to be.
Do you think schools should use more technology to help children learn?
Yes, I think technology can be extremely/incredibly effective in helping students to learn. For example, integrating technology in classrooms can make students stay engaged with the lesson. Most young people are very familiar with mobile devices and tablets so will relish the opportunity to interact with them in an academic environment. Combining new tech like VR with traditional classroom instruction is another example of how the introduction of new technology can enhance the learning experience. Finally, utilizing technology in schools helps to break the traditional passive learning model and instead allows children to take a more active role in their own education.
Do you agree or disagree that computers will replace teachers one day?
I actually disagree/ I don’t actually go along with this viewpoint. Although the use of technology will continue to increase and play a larger part in education, I can’t see computers ever entirely replacing teachers. The role of a teacher is not simply one of transferring information and facts to students. Teachers also act as guides, friends and mentors. They need to be empathetic, adaptable and able to use their intuition to resolve complex human problems. Computers are simply unable to compete with a real teacher in this process. In short/brief, automation will no doubt make many jobs redundant, but teachers are surely safe for the time being.
How much has technology improved how we communicate with each other?
It has certainly changed communication tremendously/immensely. These days, talking to each other is simple, and our loved ones are easily contactable at any time. This is of course an incredible thing that we often take for granted. However, I also think that because of the nature of this communication, it is sometimes easy to misunderstand each other. We are constantly using written text, or only our voices. Even when we video call we’re battling faulty wifi connections. These limitations mean that our communication becomes distorted and confused. Despite all of the innovations technology has brought us, it’s still impossible to beat old fashioned face-to-face conversations.
Do you agree that there are many more technological innovations to be made?
Absolutely yes/ Yes, I suppose I do agree, but I think the rate of innovation will slow down in the coming years. Throughout history, societies have gone through certain periods of extreme modernization and change, just look at the renaissance in Europe, or the industrial revolution of the 1800s. As a civilisation, we’re currently experiencing another similar period of massive innovation with new technologies and new systems. Without a doubt, there are more breakthroughs to be made in science and technology but who knows what exactly they could be. If I were able to predict these kinds of game changing technologies, I’d be a rich man.
Could you suggest some reasons why some people are deciding to reduce their use of technology?
I think people are beginning to realise the limitations and even the potentially harmful effects of technology. Internet addiction is a real problem, especially in young people who often end up spending hours scrolling mindlessly through social media, or playing video games. It’s been scientifically proven that overuse of the internet, especially social media, can also lead to extreme anxiety and self-esteem issues. Reducing our use of technology allows us to engage more with reality, and reconnect with the parts of our lives that really matter.
