Why do some people find the internet addictive?
I think the internet can be addictive for the same reason that it can be so fantastic. The internet offers endless entertainment, fascination, and even social interaction. I can't think of any other space, wither physical or abstract, that can fulfill so many personal needs in one place. Unfortunately, this also means that it can be incredibly destructive, and leads people to lose jobs, relationships and families.
What would the world be like without the internet?
One thing that would be very different is the way in which we consume world news. These days, we can share important stories and amateur footage from all over the globe at the click of a button (= in the blink of an eye). Without the Internet, we would be much more reliant on journalists to accurately report what is happening in other countries. Frankly, we would be much less connected in general. Then again perhaps, it would also have some positive implications. We’d probably all be much more active and social. For example, if we wanted to research a particular subject, we’d have to leave the house and go to an actual library.
Do you think the way people use the internet might change in the future?
Yes, I mean the Internet is still relatively young, so we’re in the early stages of figuring out how best to use it. I think in the future, the internet will become more streamlined and less chaotic. I think, we’ll also become more adept at learning how to use this incredibly powerful tool at our dispose, without slipping into the pitfalls of past generations. For example, Internet addiction and the trappings of social media will be more easily avoidable when we have some distance and can see the damage that they cause.
What are the ways social media can be used for positive purposes?
I think the positive aspects of social media come into light when it enables people to come together as a community. Look at the recent #MeToo movement for example, which thanks to social media, raised people’s awareness of the scale of sexual assault prevalent in our society. Facebook and Twitter have also been expertly implemented to organise large scale demonstrations against oppressive governments. All of these issues ultimately show that social media can be an incredibly positive force when used to give a voice to those who ordinarily would not be heard.
Why do some people write negative comments about other people on social media?
Honestly, I have no idea. Cyberbullying is a big problem and one without an easy solution. The Internet should always be an open space that champions free speech, but the negative side of this freedom the trolls who hide behind computer screens and spread hate with hurtful comments.
Do you think company’s main form of advertising will be on social media in the future?
Perhaps. I haven’t given it much thought, but it seems plausible that companies will continue to push advertising on social media sites. These days, people use social media with such regularity that it’s an open goal for advertisers. The flexible privacy laws currently in place also help advertisers target specific demographics and manipulate users into buying their products.
