1. Be set in your ways = to do the same things every day and to not want to change those habit
Example: As people get older, they often become set in their ways.
2. Set your heart on sth/doing sth = to want to get or achieve something very much: Vô cùng mong muốn điều gì đó xảy ra và đến sớm.
Example: She’s set her heart on having a pony.
3. Set in stone = to be very difficult or impossible
Example: The schedule isn’t set in stone, but we’d like to stick to it pretty closely.
4. Set the stage (for something) = to make it possible for something else to happen: chuẩn bị cho cáci gì
Example: The new evidence sets the stage for a long and interesting trial.
5. (Something) is all set = it’s completely ready/finished: mọi chuyện đã an bài
Example: “Just sign the application here, and then you’re all set!”
6. Set/lay the table = arrange the table in preparation for eating; put plates, bowls, glasses, napkins, utensils, etc. on the table: dọn bàn ăn
Example: “Kids, could you please set the table? We’ll be eating in 10 minutes.”
7. Set a fire / set something on fire = cause something to start burning with fire: gây cháy
Example: “Some fireworks accidentally hit the house next door and set the roof on fire.”
8. Set an alarm = schedule/program an alarm to sound (go off) at a certain time: đặt đồng hồ báo thức
Example: “We’re leaving at 9 tomorrow morning, so you should set your alarm for 8:00.”
9. Set a record = establish/create a record; do something better than anyone has done it before: lập kỉ lục
Example: “One athlete set a record for the fastest time in Olympic history.”
10. Set a good/bad example = establish/show some behavior that can influence others for good or bad: là 1 tấm gương tốt/xấu
Example: Teachers have try to set a good example for young people.
11. Set a precedent = establish a situation that could become a tradition or will be used as reference for future similar situations. It usually refers to a legal decision that may be considered a standard for future cases: đưa ra tiền lệ
Example: “The case in 1998 set a precedent that drunk drivers should be punished severely.”
12. Set a trap = prepare a piece of equipment to catch an animal, or prepare a strategy to catch, trick, or hurt an unsuspecting person: đặt bẫy
Example: “The hunters set a trap for foxes.”
13. Set foot in= enter a particular place or step on a particular area: đặt chân đến nơi nào..
Example: James had never set foot in Italy before.
