Từ KEEP là 1 từ cực đơn giản, dễ nhớ trong tiếng Anh, nhưng có nhiều cụm đi với KEEP mà nhiều bạn còn chưa biết mà thực tế lại rất dễ dùng. Ví dụ, trong topic SPENDING TIME ALONE (topic part 1 mới nhất của quý 2 IELTS SPeaking năm nay) thì cụm I TEND TO KEEP MYSELF TO MYSELF (tôi có xu hướng sống khép kín) là 1 cụm cực hay mà chúng mình có thể áp dụng vào topic này, không quá đao to búa lớn mà lại nhớ được lâu, dễ dùng và tạo sắc thái, hình ảnh riêng cho câu trả lời của mình!
1. Keep/hold someone at bay = to prevent someone from moving closer: giữ ai ở khoảng cách an toàn
Example: He held the police at bay for several hours.
2. Keep (someone/something) out of something = to prevent yourself or someone else from involvement in something: Ngăn ai đó/ cái gì đó khỏi điều gì đó
Example: Carolyn keeps out of the public eye and away from Washington.
3. Keep (yourself) to yourself = to not talk to other people very much: sống khép kín
Example: He’s a very private person - he keeps (himself) to himself.
4. Keep (yourself) from something = to prevent yourself from doing something: ngăn không cho bản thân làm gì
Example: We couldn’t keep from laughing.
5. Keep your/an eye on sth/sb = to watch or take care of something or someone: để mắt, canh chừng đến cái gì…
Example: Will you keep your eye on my suitcase while I go to get the tickets?
6. Keep your eyes open/peeled = to watch carefully for something: xem kỹ càng cái gì
Example: I try to always keep my eyes open for good recipes.
7. Keep someone company = to stay with someone so the person is not alone: ở bên ai đó
Example: I kept him company while he was waiting for the bus.
8. Keep someone posted = to make sure someone knows what is happening, esp. in a situation that is quickly changing: Làm cho ai đó biết chắc chắn về chuyện gì đang sảy ra
Example: The doctors kept me posted about her condition.
9. Keep track (of sth) = to keep a record of something, or make certain that you know or remember what has happened: Theo sát, bám sát cái gì
Example: Keep track of the hours you work.
10. Keep a cool head = to stay calm in a difficult situation: giữ bình tĩnh
Example: I don't know how you manage to keep such a cool head in such a hectic, stressful office!
11. Keep your promise/word = to do what you have told someone that you would do: giữ lời hứa
12. Keep a secret = to not tell anyone a secret that you know: giữ bí mật
Example: I made a promise to you and I intend to keep it.
13. Keep a firm hand on sth = to control something or someone carefully: kiếm soát cái gì/ai đó cẩn thận
Example: Susan keeps a firm hand on everything that goes on in the office
14. Keep (one's) hands clean: To keep a distance from or avoid becoming involved with something that is or might be considered unsavory, immoral, illicit, or illegal: không tham gia vào những hoạt động bất hợp pháp hoặc vô đạo đức.
Example: You're not going to get very far in this business if you're worrying about keeping your hands clean.
