Chỉ còn 1 vài ngày nữa là năm mới 2021 sắp sang rồi, dù có chuyện gì tệ hại xảy ra với bạn thì năm mới cũng là thời điểm để chúng mình làm lại mọi chuyện từ đầu và đón chào với nhiều sự hy vọng, hân hoan cũng như lên dây cót tinh thần để có 1 năm mới 2021 thật thành công nhé.
1. A new lease of life = an occasion when you become more energetic and active than before: Một thời cơ mới để sống khỏe mạnh và vui vẻ, thành công sau khi vượt qua một khoảng thời gian khó khăn và gian nan.
Example: His grandchildren have given him a new lease of life.
2. Kick/break the habit = to give up something harmful that you have done for a long time: từ bỏ thói quen xấu
Example: She used to be a heavy smoker but she kicked the habit last year.
3. Wipe the slate clean = to start a new and better way of behaving, forgetting about any bad experiences in the past: xóa bỏ, tha thứ, quên đi những việc làm sai trước đây (của ai)
Example: A new relationship presents you with the opportunity to wipe the slate clean.
4. Get your act together = to organize yourself so that you do things in an effective way: thích ứng với hoàn cảnh mới bằng cách hành động có hiệu quả, hay chỉnh đốn lại cách làm việc của mình.
Example: Mr Dinsdale said it was crucial that the Department of Trade & Industry got its act together.
5. From scratch = from the beginning, without using anything that already exists: bắt đầu lại từ đầu
Example: Ben built the shed from scratch.
6. A fresh start = a situation in which you start something again in a completely new and different way after you have been unsuccessful: 1 sự khởi đầu mới
Example: The program will allow economically strapped taxpayers to make a fresh start.
7. Turn over a new leaf = to start behaving in a better way: bắt đầu sang trang mới/cuộc đời mới….
Example: Apparently he's turned over a new leaf and he's not smoking any more.
8. Hit the ground running = to immediately work hard and successfully at a new activity: bắt đầu một việc gì đó với sự phấn khởi và làm nó một cách nhanh chóng, không lãng phí thời gian.
Example: Companies often expect staff to hit the ground running.
9. Put something behind someone/pʊt/ = to try to forget or ignore something unpleasant: để lại mọi thứ đằng sau
Example: I’m going to put all this behind me and think about the future.
10. Cold turkey /ˌkəʊld ˈtɜː.ki/: the period of extreme suffering that comes immediately after a person has stopped taking a drug on which they depend: thay đổi hành vi một cách dần dần
Example: Six years ago she went cold turkey on (= stopped completely) a three-pack-a-day smoking habit.
