Tiếp nối các thành ngữ phổ biến chủ đề thể thao nay chúng mình cùng tiếp học idioms cực tuyệt đã được liệt kê bên dưới, sau các cụm chúng mình có ghi rõ các thành ngữ này xuất phát từ bộ môn thể thao nào đó

1. The home straight (athletics) = the last part of an activity: chặng cuối cuộc đua, phần kết thúc
Example: I’ve got the dissertation to hand in and then I’m on the home straight.
2. Hit something out of the park (baseball) = to do something really well: làm cực tốt
Example: Guys, he hit our presentation out of the park.
3. Step up to the plate (baseball) = take action and responsibility at a time of need
Example: Shana stepped up to the plate and hit the presentation out of the park.
4. Drop the ball (cricket) = make a mistake, fail to do something that you are responsible for: thất bại
Example: The government have really dropped the ball when it comes to the vaccine roll out.
5. Below the belt (boxing): a bit insulting & unfair: không chuẩn đạo đức (chơi bẩn)
Example: My wife said a few things about my family that were below the belt.
6. The ball is in someone’s court (tennis) = responsible for something or make a decision: đã đến lượt bạn hành động tiếp, và là quyết định của bạn thôi.
Example: Come on James! The ball is in the your court now.
7. Throw in the towel (boxing) = stop doing something because you realise you won’t succeed: bỏ cuộc
Example: We tried to buy the house but it’s got too complicated so we decided to throw in the towel.
8. Jump the gun (athletics) = do something too quickly without thinking about it properly: quá vội vàng
Example: Don’t you think they are jumping a gun a bit?
9. Throw someone a curveball (baseball) = do something that is unexpected and difficult to react too: dành sự bất ngờ khiến ai bối rối, khó chịu
Example: My partner told me that she wants to relocate to New Work which was a bit of a curveball.
10. Out of left flied (baseball) = unexpected and surprises you = out of the blue: việc gì rất bất ngờ, không thể tưởng tượng được.
Example: My boss’s resignation came completely out of left field.
11. A long short (football) = an attempt that probably won’t be successful but worth having a go: nỗ lực vô vọng
Example: It’s a bit of a long shot but I’m going to apply for the coding job at Google.
12. Par for the course (golf) = the usual or expected situation: bình thường, như mong đợi, không có gì bất ngờ cả.
Example: These thunder storms are par for the course at this time of year.
13. On the ball (football) = quickly understand the situation and know what to do: hiểu tình thế…
Example: They are really on the ball and have integrated really well into the team.
14. Meet one’s match = be up against someone who is as good, if not better than you: gặp đúng đối thủ
Example: PSC won the French league very easily but they met their match in the Champion League semi final against Manchester City.
