Why do people make plans?
Well, to put it simply, people make plans so that they can do things efficiently and make progress. If you plan for the future then it stands to reason that you’re more likely to achieve your goals. A teacher once told me, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. He was referring to exams but I think this adage can be applied to any situation. Planning is frankly essential to our success.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of planning?
Obviously, there are a number of positive benefits when it comes to planning (or: Well, I think the advantages are obvious). If you plan, then you will be able to manage your time more effectively and get more done in your days. It also helps when trying to achieve long term goal, because you can clearly see each stage like steps on a ladder. So, planning will definitely help you get to the top of that ladder with relative ease. The disadvantages are more elusive but still worth noting. I think planning does hinder creative thinking and improvisation. Approaching projects, especially creative ones such as writing books or composing songs, without a plan can lead to unexpected and truly innovative results, because you’re free to experiment along the way.
Why do some people hate making plans?
I think it has a lot to do with the point that I just made. Some people feel that making plans boxes them in and restricts their freedom. I think this is especially true when organising plans that are a long time in the future. Personally, I am not really into planning for things that are more than a couple of weeks away, because I don’t know how I will feel in the future. I might have completely changed my mind by the time the plan comes to fruition.
What plans do people make when they get old?
People often spend a lot of time and energy making plans for their retirement. In fact, I would hazard a guess that older people spend more time planning for early retirement plans than they spend enjoying their final years of freedom when those years eventually come. They may plan exotic holidays, house renovation, or rediscovering old hobbies that they didn’t have time for when they were working. Of course, when people get old they also tend to plan for the inevitable end, by making a will. I’m often surprised by how detailed these plans seem to be, with long lists of money and assets assigned to multiple benefactors.
