What kind of problems do areas of cities have in your country?

Well, I suppose that there are a few significant problems in the city, one of which is the traffic. There are so many motorbikes and cars commute on a daily basis. Understandably, the high volume of traffic creates inevitable traffic congestion especially during rush hour, it can take a very long time to get anywhere. The traffic also contributes to another major problem and that’s pollution. The air is often very terrible, and thick with petrol fumes, not to mention the noise and light pollution which also affects the whole city. Another problem in cities tends to face with is crime rate. Luckily, Hanoi is quite safe compared to other places. Although I’m sure it’s still a problem, most crime is fairly low here.

Are the problems in rural areas different?

Definitely yes! I’m sure rural areas suffer from completely different problems. In the countryside, unemployment and poverty are amongst the biggest concerns. The knock-on effects of these issues also include alcoholism, domestic violence and illiteracy in children. There are also many environmental problems as deforestation sweeps large areas of nature away, and plastic waste pollutes the rivers that many fishing communities depend upon for their livelihood.

Do you think that city governments do enough to provide better services?

Honestly, I don’t think governments do enough. That’s obvious when you look at the city I live in. Pavements are cracked and poorly kept, rubbish piles up in the streets, and the rivers and lakes are filthy and rancid. However, I do think the government here is beginning to tackle the issues slowly but surely. They’re building new roads and improving the infrastructure of the city. They’re even creating an entirely new metro system from scratch. The government is clearly intent on transforming the city, but with such an ambitious project progress is bound to be slow. Perhaps more could be done, but at least something is being done.

What else can be done to improve the standard of living in your city?

The most significant thing that can be done is to pedestrianise certain areas of the city. This would reduce pollution from vehicles and create a quieter, safer, and more peaceful neighbourhood. This, combined with improving public transport, could play a massive role in creating a cleaner, greener atmosphere. It would give children a fighting chance of growing up in an environment where they can breathe safe and fresh airRegular rubbish collection is also a fundamental aspect that could transform the city in the blink of an eye.
