II/ COMMON QUESTION

Part 1: Frequent questions and answers

  1. Do you like art?
  • Yes, I like all types of arts, modern art, ancient art, cultural art, performance art, etc…. The fact is there is art everywhere and in everything. Whether it is a structural art of a building or a special way a chef creates a delicacy. I believe art is a beautiful thing and that it is the greatest form of human expression.
  • I havea lifelong passion for art since I was a child. Beside official art class in school, I also joined a drawing class in The Children’ House and my teachers were very pleased with my drawings. I also participated in some drawing competitions back then. Until now I still draw in my free time, although not as often as I used to do.

  1. Do you think art is an important part of life?
  • Yes, if there was no art, everyone and everything would be the same. There would be no entertainment. Life would be dull; we would all just work and go crazy. If we didn’t have art, we would all be robots.

  1. Do you think art classes are necessary?
  • Yes, definitely. Learning art, especially at a young age, can help stimulate children’s cognitive developmentand encourage them to think outside the box. Because they’re still little, their ideas are very fresh and lovely, which is worth appreciating.

Cognitive development (noun): the construction of thought processes, including remembering, problem solving, and decision-making.

Think outside the box (idiom): think creatively ( ý nghĩ sáng tạo)

  • Definitely yes. Art is the one subject, I believe, that allow you to be creative. So, here nothing is right or wrong, it is about what you could think of. It allows children to realise the happiness of creating something and it is powerful.

  1. How do you think art classes affect children’s development?
  • Art is very essential for the development of a child. It helps children in learning a language. It is through the colours and shapes, action that they learn activities. Also, it helps children in making decisions. The experience of making decisions and choices in the course of creating art creatures carries on to life. So, a child who cannot even decide the color to chose surely has some decision issues in life. And there is so much more, a child learns culture and visual learning.

  1. What experience of art did you have when you were younger?
  • My mother thought it was a good idea for me to learn more about Vietnamese culture. We took a field trip to a museum; I saw many beautiful ancient Vietnamese artifacts that made me proud to be a Vietnamese. We have a rich culture and the trip made me want to learn more about it.

  1. Do people in Vietnam like visiting museums and art galleries?
  • Not everyone in Vietnam enjoys going to museums. Most of my friends are not interested in art, but I have a small passion for it. After I graduated, I began to enjoy taking trips to various art exhibits. Since then, I have made a few friends that are artists, and now they invite me to their galleries quite often.

  1. Do you think going to museums and art galleries is beneficial for children?
  • Yes I believe going to museums can be very beneficial for children. They can learn more about history and culture. Art can broaden their minds and their outlooks on life. It can also inspire them to be more creative, to have original ideas, and to be intentive.
  • Yes, museums are a great educational tool. They act as windows into the past better than any text books. Seeing a picture of something isn’t as good as seeing it up close. With the way some museums are set up, you can almost feel like you are back in time as you view the items. Sometimes we find out that things “way back then” weren’t really all that different to today in many ways, while they were so different in other ways.
  • I think definitely yes. Art is that part of our lives that brings out the creative side of ours. If children go and visit art galleries, they might be able to understand things better and may be feel motivated to draw things and explore their creative side.
  • I don’t think children will be very much benefited by just going to art gallery. It is very important for them to understand what is being shown, what is the meaning, how it has been made and why is art important. It is only when they understand the answers to the questions, it makes sense to make children visit art gallery.
  • I think definitely yes. Museums enlighten children about their history and knowing the history is important to have a better understanding of the present. Art galleries on other hand help a child to improve their visual analytics power. It is when the child tries to understand what the painting is about, they develop the analytical skills.

  1. What benefits can you get from painting as a hobby?
  • I think the mediation efficiencyworths mentioning first. Colors in some ways reflect our thoughts and emotions very well and somehow stimulate our body to defense against our negativity inside. For me, in particular, I think what’s so interesting about painting is that you have no idea how harmonized colors can become until you actually try.

Mediation (n) psychological treatment to stay calm ( sự hòa giải)

To be harmonized (n) to be well combined ( hài hòa với nhau)

  • Painting allows us to be creative, to make choices and helps in healing. So, it is not just about painting the perfect potrait but about letting your thoughts on the paper. When people do it , it really affects their psychology making them happier and more content with life.

  1. Is art popular in your country?
  • I would say, art surely does gets importance as people really like to see great art work but when it comes down to choosing arts as a career it is not a very popular choice among people. They prefer pursuing their art goals a mere hobby.
  • Arts is truly respected in my country. People who can draw well are surely in demand in fields like army, police and country development. Recently, our prime minister hired twenty great artist of our country to create designs that will be painted on the walls of areas which are not very developed. He has a vision to ensure that every one lives in a nice livelihood.

  1. Do schools in Vietnam have field trips to museums?
  • Not all schools in Vietnam have field trips to museums, and I think every school should. Many children get bored of the everyday routine of school. Field trips give children a chance to learn outside of traditional classroom setting and can spark new interests in

Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Talk about a painting you would like to have in your home.

    You should say:

  • what is it
  • how you know about it
  • how much it would cost you

and explain why you want to have it in your home.

Sample Answer:

‘The Creation of Adam’ painted by Michelangelo is the painting that I would like to have in my house. This is a painting that forms the part of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling and it illustrates the Biblical creation narration of human from the book of Genesis. This picture depicts the creation of human where God breathes the life into Adam. This is considered to be one of the finest works ever done by a painter and only rivalled by two other great painting: Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

I saw a picture of this painting in our history book when I was in high school and then I was amazed by the painting and the idea of the painting. I am sure this painting is priceless and no individual would be able to own it and hang it in his/her house. But I can buy a copied version of this painting which would cost me around $90.

When I looked at the painting in my early childhood, I was enthralled by the idea and fine work of this painting.  This was the painting that inspired me to learn more about painting and greatest work of mythological paintings. Later I learned about other great paintings by Michelangelo and by other greatest artists. Furthermore, every time I look at this picture, I feel the overwhelming joy of creation, the human race and divinity. Because of this, I would like to have this picture (more accurately the copy of the original one) in my home.

Describe a piece of art that you know about.

   You should say:

         What is it?

         How do know about it?

         Do you like it? Why?

Sample Answer:

One of the most popular pieces of art worldwide is the "Mona Lisa" painting by an Italian artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. Actually, as far as I know, this is "the most recognized, the most talked about, the most visited" artwork in the history of art.

The painting is so famous that I personally think there is hardly anyone who hasn't heard about or seen copies of it. It was originally thought to be the half-length portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, painted between 1503 and 1506. That is why it is also called "La Joconde" in French. However, whose poitrait it actually is remains a controversal question. Some say that Da Vinci just painted himself in a female version. Another belief is Mona Lisa is the artist's own mother, which explains the likeness between the poitrait and its creator.

I'm very interested in the work of art, mostly because of its history and mysteries. The painting has been stolen for several times. There was a time people even thought that it would never be found again. Fortunately, it was. However, there have been so many genious copies of the painting that nobody can be quite sure where the original one really is. It is even bullet proof so that less demage will be made to it. One of the most curious things about the picture is Mona Lisa's smile, or half smile, to be precise. It has been said that whether it is a happy smile or sad one depends on the mood of the observer. What is the meaning of the smile or what truth is hiden behind it has been discussed by the most renowned experts but I personally think Da Vince took the secret with him six feet under and no one would ever know the answers.

Part 3: Discussion

  1. Explain whether yoou think there is a need for museums and art galleries in our society.
  2. Can you suggest some ways in which museums could be made more interesting places to visit.
  3. Evaluate the role museums; galleries and other places of cultural interest play in Vietnamese society.
  4.  Evaluate the role that public artworks.
