1. across the board : công bằng với mọi người 
            e.g: Ten percent raises were given across the board

2. at this stage in the game: vào thời gian này 

            e.g: Nobody knows who is going to win the election at this stage in the game.

3. the ball is in your court: đó là quyết định hoặc trách nhiệm của bạn để làm một thứ gì đó bây giờ 

            e.g: "Do you think I should accept the job offer?"
                   "Don't ask me. The ball is in your court now".

4. blow the competition away: chiến thắng một cách dễ dàng 
            e.g: If you wear that dress to the beauty pageant you are going to blow the competition away.

    

5. call the shots: quyết định (= make the decisions)

            e.g: While our boss is on vacation, Bob will call the shots.

6. chip in: đóng góp tiền hoặc thời gian 
            e.g: The staff members chipped in 5 dollars each to buy Jody a birthday gift.

7. down to the wire: đúng vào phút cuối cùng 

            e.g: It's coming down to the wire to get these done on time.

8. front runner: một trong những người mong đợi sự chiến thắng 

            e.g: Angela is a front runner for the new supervisor position.

9. get a head start: bắt đầu trước mọi người 
   
   

            e.g: They gave the walkers a head start in the run for cancer.

10. get into the full swing : thoải mái làm việc gì đó sau một thời gian 

             e.g: It will probably take a month of working at my new job before I get into the full swing of things.

11. get off the hook: thoát khỏi, có trách nhiệm rời đi 

             e.g: The child got off the hook for stealing because the security camera was broken.

     

12. give something or someone a fair shake: cố gắng làm gì đó trước khi từ bỏ 

             e.g: You should give Nadine a fair shake before you decide she isn't good enough for the job.

     

13. get a second wind: đốt cháy năng lượng sau khi mệt 
             e.g: I was exhausted after 3 kilometres of running, but I got a second wind after I passed the beach.

     

14. give it your best shot: cố gắng hết sức

             e.g: Give it your best shot and you may just make it to the finals.

     

15. give one a run for one's money: cố gắng hết sức đánh bại người khác 

             e.g: I know the other team is expected to win, but let's give them a run for their money tonight.

     

16. go overboard: nói hay làm nhiều hơn bạn cần 

             e.g: You can't believe everything Janice says about Rick. She tends to go overboard when she's complaining about him.

     

17. go to bat for someone: đánh bại ai đó 

             e.g: Andy is asking for a salary increase, and I'm going to go to bat for him if the boss says no.

     

18. have the upper hand: có cơ hội tốt hơn để chiến thắng hay thành công 

             e.g: The Blues have the upper hand in the tournament, because none of their players is injured.

     

19. hit below the belt: làm hay nói điều gì khá không công bằng hoặc xấu xa

             e.g: Amanda was hitting below the belt when she called Adrian an unfit father.

     

20. hit a snag: gặp phải vấn đề 
             e.g: The renovations were going along great until we hit a snag with the carpet installation.

     

21. hold all the aces: mong đợi chiến thắng hay thành công 

             e.g: The children hold all the aces when it comes to the father-son baseball tournament.

22. hot shot (big shot) : người quan trọng hay cực kỳ thành công 

        e.g: All the hot shots from Silicon Valley were invited to meet the president

23. jump the gun: bắt đầu quá sớm 

        e.g: I guess I jumped the gun by buying Pam and Steve a wedding gift. They called off the engagement.

     

24. keep one's head above water: cố gắng một cách khó khăn để đối phó vấn đề tài chính,việc làm

        e.g: We are so busy during the tourist season I can barely keep my head above water.

     

25. learn the ropes: hiểu những thứ mới 

        e.g: The first week on the job you will just be learning the ropes.

     

26. let her rip: đi thẳng ngay bây giờ 
    
    

     e.g:  Okay, here are the keys to your new car. Let her rip!

     

27. level playing field: mọi người đều có cơ hội như nhau 

     e.g: The spelling bee is a level playing field because all of the kids are in grade nine.

     

28. long shot: một thứ rất khó để hoàn thành

     e.g: Jim thinks we can afford the house, but I think it's a long shot.

29. neck and neck: ở trong một sự ràng buộc với ai đó 

     e.g: George and Stan are neck and neck in the hockey pool. Either of them could win the money.

     

30. no sweat: không vấn đề

     e.g: I told Lily it was no sweat for us to babysit next weekend.

     

31. not playing with a full deck (of cards): not having full brain capacity

     e.g: I think Jerry was still drunk at work on Sunday because he wasn't playing with a full deck.

     

32. not up to par: không đủ thực lực cho công việc hay vị trí nào đó 

     e.g: I'm afraid your resume isn't up to par for the engineering position.

     

33. to be off base: không tạo nên tự công bằng 

     e.g: You were way off base when you said Bill needed to lose weight.

     

34. on target: làm cái gì đó đúng để thành công 

     e.g: We are on target to meet our budget this month.
