Do you like to watch the sky? 

Yes, when it comes to nature some people say they like the beaches, the mountains, or the oceans. But I always say the sky. It’s so magical when you can see countless glittering and twinkling stars. It’s almost like a glimpse of heaven. The sky never disappears like the flowers in spring or the leaves in autumn, but it is always there, continually changing.    

What is the sky like at night in your hometown? 

To be honest with you, with the high level of air pollution in Hanoi, the chance you can enjoy spectacular views of the sky are almost never. Having said that, on some clear, cloudless nights the stars are bright and visible, I can see all the constellations in the vast cosmos. 

Do you like to watch stars? 

Absolutely. One of my most cherished memories from my childhood is lying outside at night and watching shooting stars during a meteor shower. I still like to watch stars but of course these days I don’t have time to kill aimlessly star gazing in the way that I did in my youth.  

Have you ever taken a course about stars? 

No, and to be honest, Astronomy doesn’t really appeal to me (= or: Astronomy doesn’t really tickle my fancy). I think, sometimes studying something academically can kill the simple joy that comes from uninformed appreciation. As people often say, ignorance is bliss.

What’s your favourite star? 

It’s actually a cluster of stars called ‘the seven sisters’. I’m particularly enthralled by these stars because bizarrely they are easiest to see when not looked at directly. I think this elusiveness only adds to their sense of magic and mystery. 

Is it important to study stars?

Yes, I believe that astronomy has always played a vital role in our world view as/because it can help broaden our mind, give context to our place in the cosmos and that can definitely reshape how we see the world.

7. Cherished adjective/ˈtʃer·ɪʃt/: bringing the pleasure of love or caring about someone or something that is important to you: ấp ủ

Example: Her most cherished possession is a 1926 letter from F. Scott Fitzgerald. (sự ấp ủ nhất của cô là một bức thư năm 1926 từ F. Scott Fitzgerald.)

8. Shooting star noun /ˌʃuː.tɪŋ ˈstɑːr/: a meteor (= a piece of rock from space that produces a bright light as it travels through the earth's atmosphere): sao băng
9. Meteor shower noun /ˈmiː.ti.ɔː ˌʃaʊ.ər/: an occasion when a number of meteors (= pieces of matter in space that produce a bright light as they travel) move fast across the sky at night: Mưa sao băng

Example: The Orionids are one of two annual meteor showers. (Orionids là một trong hai trận mưa sao băng hàng năm.)

10. Gaze verb  /ɡeɪz/: to look at something or someone for a long time, especially in surprise or admiration, or because you are thinking about something else: nhìn chằm chằm

11. Aimless adjective /ˈeɪm.ləs/: without any clear intentions, purpose, or direction:
