Hanoi has witnessed tremendous changes to become a beautiful and vibrant city like now. However, there are still many public places which I think need a complete transformation. For instance, the public toilets around Old Quarter Streets area.

You know public toilets are always the most frequently asked questions for any tourists when travelling. It’s easily taken for granted but it plays an indispensable part in promoting any city’s image as well as enhancing visitor’s experiences.

The city’s Old Quarter has 16 public toilets in total. However, many of them are so dilapidated and dirty with stinky smells now. I think it’s primarily because they are not cleaned enough. There are no wastepaper baskets next to some toilets. Also many sewage systems cannot handle toilet problem. Some public toilets are even also occupied by drug addicts. As a consequence, these public toilets have failed to meet hygiene requirements, particularly from tourists, in terms of both quantity and quality. As well as this, the shortage of land and finance and slack management are partly to blame for the problem.

What I absolutely can’t stand is the acrid and foul-smelling urine from 2 public toilets in the Hoan Kiem lake area. Whenever passing this area, I have to hold my breath. Although I have never used those public toilets, I’m sure it does not provide good facilities to encourage users to use them properly.

I strongly believe that the government bodies, especially in the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, should upgrade current public restrooms in tourist sites and install more modern ones with essential facilities, clean water around the clock and put it in the right place. Local residents should be made aware of the importance of keeping the image of Vietnam charming.

Once they have taken action, public urination will decrease straight away. We can’t let the image of Vietnam worsen in the eyes of tourists for the lack of toilets!
