Well, of all the important plants in my country, the Lotus is definitely my all-time favourite plant.

It is highly regarded in Southeast Asia as it is a sacred flower in both Buddism and Hinduism and it is considered as a symbol of Buddha.

To Vietnamese people, there is no other plant like the Lotus that signifies purity, serenity and optimism for the future.

I believe that all Vietnamese people first came to know this plant since an early age and I am not an exception. You can see the Lotus everywhere as its image is widely used in ancient arts, folk songs, architecture and even fashion that make it become an indispensable part of Vietnamese culture.

So, basically, it is an aquatic plant and is found floating on leaves in shallow and murky water. In Hanoi, Lotus flowers are in bloom from around mid-May to mid-July in a vast arrays of ponds and lakes. Lotus flowerscan be commonly seen in white and pink. The white represents purity of the mind and soul. Whereas, the pink lotus shows the history of Buddha.

The thing that makes this plant so special is that despite growing in a muddy water, it rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty and a pleasant fragrant scent. The mud represents all suffering and difficulties we’ve been through in life but it makes us stronger and inspires us to continue striving through resilience to show our best part into the world. As for this, this flower symbolizes the truly divine beauty.

What I absolutely love about Lotus is because it plays crucial part in Vietnamese cuisine. As a plant, all of its parts are beneficial and comes in handy to us in many ways. The stem is used in Lotus stem salad and the stamens can be made into a herbal speciality tea. Interestingly, Northern people often have the green rice wrapped in the aromatic leaves which make a perfect delicacy. To put the icing on the cake, the old Lotus seed can be used in medicines and is effective in curing and various digestive problem.

All in all, it’s no wonder that Lotus is chosen as the national flower because of its cultural significance, symbolism and popularity.

  1. Definitely - without any doubt = absolutely

  3. Sacred - considered to be holy and deserving respect, especially because of a connection with a god

Example: This area is sacred to the Apaches.: Khu vực này là thiêng liêng đối với Apaches.

  1. A symbol of Buddha : biểu tượng của Phật
  2. Signifie purity, serenity and optimism : biểu tượng cho sự thuần thiết, sự thanh bình và sự lạc quan
  3. Serenity - thequality of being peaceful and calm : sự yên bình/ thanh thản

Example: I admired her serenity in the midst of so much chaos.: Tôi ngưỡng mộ sự thanh thản của cô ấy ở giữa rất nhiều hỗn loạn.

Example: The hotel offers a tranquil haven of peace and serenity, away from the bustle of the city.: Khách sạn cung cấp một thiên đường yên tĩnh và thanh thản, tránh xa sự nhộn nhịp của thành phố

  1. Purity -the quality of being morally good or the state of not having sex: sự thuần khiết

Example: the purity and innocence of children: sự thuần khiết và hồn nhiên của trẻ em

Example: For Christians, the Virgin Mary is a symbol of purity.: Đối với các Kitô hữu, Đức Trinh Nữ Maria là biểu tượng của sự thuần khiết.

  1. Optimism - the quality of being full of hope and emphasizing the good parts of a situation, or a belief that something good will happen: sự lạc quan/ yêu đời

Example: There was a note of optimism in his voice as he spoke about the company's future.: Có một sự lạc quan trong giọng nói của anh khi anh nói về tương lai của công ty.

  1. Since an early age : kể từ hồi bé
  2. Ancient arts :các nghệ thuật cổ truyền
  3. Folk songs: các bài hát dân gian
  4. Become an indispensable part : trở thành 1 phần không thể thiếu được
  5. Indispensable- Something or someone that is indispensable is so good or important that you could not manage without it, him, or her

Example: This book is an indispensable resource for researchers.: Cuốn sách này là một nguồn tài nguyên không thể thiếu cho các nhà nghiên cứu.

Example: His long experience at the United Nations makes him indispensable to the talks.: Kinh nghiệm lâu năm của ông tại Liên hợp quốc khiến ông không thể thiếu trong các cuộc đàm phán.

  1. Basically - used when referring to the main or most important characteristic or feature of something

Example: Basically, (= the most important thing is that) they want a lot more information about the project before they'll put any money into it.: Về cơ bản, (= điều quan trọng nhất là) họ muốn biết thêm nhiều thông tin về dự án trước khi họ bỏ tiền vào đó.

  2. Aquatic :living or growing in, happening in, or connected with water: ở dưới nước

Example: aquatic plants: loài thủy sinh

Example: aquatic sports: các môn thể thao dưới nước

  1. Shallow and murky water: Nước cạn và tối
  2. Shallow - having only a short distance from the top to the bottom: nông

Example: The stream was fairly shallow so we were able to walk across it.: Dòng suối khá nông nên chúng tôi có thể đi qua nó.

  1. Murky - dark and dirty or difficult to see through- tối tăm, u ám

Example: The river was brown and murky after the storm.

  1. To be in bloom: nở rộ
  2. Bloom - When a flowerblooms, it opens or is open, and when a plant or tree blooms it produces flowers : nở rộ

Example: These flowers will bloom all through the summer.: Những bông hoa này sẽ nở rộ suốt mùa hè. 

  1. A vast arrays of ponds and lakes: Một loạt các ao hồ
  2. Lotus - a type of tropical water lily (= a plant with large, flat leaves that float on the surface of lakes and pools): hoa sen

  1. Stem - a central part of something from which other parts can develop or grow, or which forms a support : thân cây
  2. Stamen- the male part of a flower, consisting of a thin stem that holds an anther : nhị hoa
  3. A herbal speciality tea : chè đặc sản thảo mộc
  4. Interestingly : used to introduce a piece of information that the speaker thinks is strange or interesting: thú vị thay

Example: Interestingly (enough), he never actually said that he was innocent.

Example: I was just content to see my daughter in such a stable relationship but a grandchild, that really was the icing on the cake.
