What abilities make a person a good public speaker?

I think the most outstanding / impressive / significant skill to excel at public speaking is confidence. If you are not confident and nervous speaking in front of a group of people, then it is apparent and people can sense it. For me, it is the pressure I feel from all eyes on me and being in the spotlight that makes me scared when speaking to a big group of people. Another ability/ quality would be to be able to maintain the attention of the listeners through enthusiasm and charisma. Somebody with a monotonous voice and a very flat tone would be very boring to listen to.

Is it important for a person to be able to speak publicly (publically)?

I think it is a pretty practical/ applicable skill to have in life. You will always have to speak publicly (publically), whether it will be giving a presentation at school or university or in a job interview. As well as this, having confidence in one aspect (speaking) will boost your overall confidence in life.

Is it acceptable for visitors or parents to make a speech to school children?

Of course, it’s acceptable (allowable/ possible)! In fact, I think it should be encouraged. The children may gain /receive some new perspectives and inspiration from somebody speaking in front of them. To be honest with you, my uncle who is such an influential and successful person can instill ideas within my young mind. It also demonstrates to them that it’s not so much of a big deal (such a big deal) and you shouldn’t be nervous when doing it.

Is it good to use a video presentation or other visual aids during a speech?

In my opinion, the most engaging talks or speeches are much more exciting and stimulating with the use of videos, audio and other media. It will activate your brain more, thus making you want to listen more attentively. From my personal experience, I would pay more attention to a well-planned out speech than someone who appears to be really unprofessional (or clumsy).

Vocabulary highlights:

  1. Outstanding - clearly very much better than what is usual: xuất sắc/ nổi bật (nổi trội)

Example: It’s an area of outstanding natural beauty.: Nó là một khu vực có vẻ đẹp tự nhiên nổi bật.

  1. Impressive - if an object or achievement is impressive, you admire or respect it, usually because it is special, important, or very large: ấn tượng

Example: That was an impressive performance from such a young tennis player. (Đó là một màn trình diễn ấn tượng từ một tay vợt trẻ như vậy.)

  1. Significant - important or noticeable: cực kì quan trọng/ đáng kể 

Example: There has been a significant increase in the number of women students in recent years.: Đã có sự gia tăng đáng kể số lượng sinh viên nữ trong những năm gần đây.

  1. To beexcel at N/Ving : giỏi xuất sắc cái gì đó
  2. Apparent - able to be seen or understood: hiển nhiên/ rõ ràng

Example: Her unhappiness was apparent to everyone.: Sự bất hạnh của cô là rõ ràng với mọi người.

  1. People can sense it: mọi người có thể cảm nhận được điều đó
  2. All eyes on me: mọi ánh mắt dồn vào tôi
  3. In the spotlight - (of a person) receiving a lot of publicattention: trong tầm chú ý của mọi người (công chúng)

Example: The senator has been in the spotlight recently since the revelation of his tax frauds.: Các thượng nghị sĩ đã được chú ý gần đây kể từ khi tiết lộ về gian lận thuế của mình.

  1. Makes me scared: khiến cho tôi sợ hãi
  2. Another ability/ quality would be to be…: 1 khả năng/ tố chất khác nữa có lẽ là….
  3. Through enthusiasm and charisma: qua sự nhiệt huyết và cuốn hút
  4. Charisma - a special power that some people have naturally that makes them able to influence other people and attract their attention and admiration: sự lôi cuốn

Example: On screen Garbo had this great charisma so that you couldn't take your eyes off her. : Trên màn hình, Garbo có sức thu hút lớn đến mức bạn không thể rời mắt khỏi cô ấy.

  1. Amonotonous voice: 1 giọng nhàm chán
  2. A very flat tone: 1 tông giọng cực kì đều đều
  3. A pretty practical/ applicable skill: 1 kĩ năng khá là thực tế/ có thể áp dụng được
  4. Speakpublicly (publically): nói trước công chúng
  5. Give a presentation = Make a speech: thuyết trình
  6. Boost your overall confidence: thúc đẩy toàn bộ sự tự tin của bạn
  7. Acceptable (allowable/ possible):có thể chấp nhận được/ có thể
  8. It should be encouraged : điều này cần được khuyến khích
  9. Gain /receive some new perspectives and inspiration : lĩnh hội/ nhận được những quan điểm mới và nguồn cảm hứng….
  10. To be honest with you : thành thật mà nói với bạn thì
  11. Such an influential and successful person : là 1 con người thực sự có tầm ảnh hưởng và thành công

  20. Unprofessional - not showing the standard of behaviour or skill that is expected of a person in a skilled job: không chuyên nghiệp

Example: Doctor Rivers was charged with unprofessional conduct and improper use of dangerous drugs.: Doctor Rivers bị buộc tội có hành vi thiếu chuyên nghiệp và sử dụng thuốc nguy hiểm không đúng cách.

  1. Clumsy - not skilful in the way you deal with or express something: vụng về/ lúng túng

Example: My attempts to apologize were very clumsy.: Những nỗ lực xin lỗi của tôi rất vụng về.
