"Idiom" (thành ngữ) và "Proverb" (tục ngữ) tiếng Anh đóng vai trò quan trọng trong văn nói và viết. "Idiom" là những cụm từ cố định, có nghĩa khác với nghĩa đen của cụm từ. Ví dụ, " to be fed up with" có nghĩa là quá chán nản với điều gì đó. Trong khi đó, "proverb" (tục ngữ) là những câu nói ngắn gọn mang ý nghĩa khuyên răn, hướng mọi người cư xử hoặc hành động đúng đắn.
 
Khi IDIOMS / PROVERBS được sử dụng đúng văn cảnh (contexts) thì sẽ được đánh giá vô cùng cao và cũng đạt được band điểm cao hơn nhiều 
 
1. It's no use crying over spilled milk = said to emphasize that it is not useful feeling sorry about something that has already happened ((Cái gì đã qua thì nên cho qua)
Example: It’s no use crying over spilled milk - he's spent all the money, and there's nothing you can do about it.
 
 
2. Don’t count your chickens/eggs before they hatch = you should not make plans that depend on something good happening before you know that it has actually happened: Bạn không nên chắc chắn một điều gì đó trước khi nó thực sự diễn ra.
Example: She wanted to buy a dress in case someone asked her to the dance, but I told her not to count her chickens before they hatched
 
3. Honesty is the best policy = said to advise someone that it is better to tell the truth than to lie: trung thực luôn là điều tốt đẹp nhất
Example: James always reminds me that “honesty is the best policy”.
 
 
4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder = used to express the fact that not all people have the same opinions about what is attractive: ý nói mỗi người đều có quan điểm khác nhau về cái đẹp
 
5. Actions speak louder than words = said to emphasize that what you do is more important and shows your intentions and feelings more clearly than what you say: hành động luôn luôn có ý nghĩa hơn lời nói suông.
Example: “Don't tell me how to do this; show me! Actions speak louder than words.”
 
6. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket = don’t depend for your success on a single person or plan of action: đừng để hết trứng trong 1 giỏ (ý nói chúng ta luôn cần có plan B cho mọi kế hoạch của mình)
Example: I’m applying for several jobs because I don't really want to put all my eggs in one basket.
 
 
7. Two heads are better than one = used to say that two people working together will achieve more than one person working alone: 2 người cùng làm việc với nhau bao giờ cũng đạt được nhiều hơn
Example: Come on, let me help you brainstorm some ideas—two heads are better than one!
 
8. Beggars can't be choosers = said when you recognize that you must accept an offer or a situation because it is the only one available to you: đã xin xỏ rồi thì không nên kén chọn
Example: I would have preferred a house of my own rather than sharing, but beggars can't be choosers, I suppose.
 
9. All good things (must) come to an end = said when you accept that even enjoyable experiences cannot last for ever: cuộc vui nào rồi cũng đến rồi kết thúc
Example: It’s been a fantastic couple of weeks but all good things must come to an end.
 
 
10. When in Rome (do as the Romans do) = when you are visiting another place, you should follow the customs of the people in that place: nhập gia tuỳ tục
Example: I don't drink wine usually but on holiday, well, when in Rome…
 
11. All that glitters is not gold = said about something that seems to be good on the surface, but might not be when you look at it more closely: Không phải mọi thứ lấp lánh đều là vàng
Example: My grandmother advised me to be careful about making new friends because all that glitters is not gold.
 
12. You win some, you lose some = something you say that means it is not possible to succeed at everything you do: Được cái này mất cái kia
Example: It would have been great to get the job but I suppose you can't win 'em all.
