Trong các bài thi IELTS, chủ đề về LIGHT& COLOUR sử dụng khá nhiều bởi những tính từ chỉ màu sắc và ánh sáng này có thể dùng cho mọi vật dụng,  ví dụ như khi bạn tả áo, bạn có thể dùng cụm từ " subdued colours" để chỉ những chiếc áo không quá sáng màu hay khi tả hoàng hôn buông xuống, ta điểm thêm cụm " tingled with gold" ( bị nhuốm vàng) sẽ phơi bày được bức tranh hoàng hôn đẹp đẽ hơn,  nên thơ hơn. Bên cạnh đó, các IDIOMS về màu sắc cũng có thể chỉ tính cách con người chứ không phải chỉ là màu sắc đơn thuần. Hãy cùng theo dõi chủ đề này với BEC nhé ^^

 

I/ VOCABULARY

  •  COLOUR
  1. Pale /peɪl/ = a light colour that is not bright or strong ( nhợt nhạt)
  2. Subdued colours /səbˈdʒuːd/ = not very bright ( màu không quá sáng)
  3. Touch of color.

               e.g: How can I add a touch of colour to my wardrobe without spending too much money?

       4. The colours go well/match with sth  ( màu hài hòa) >< the colours clash ( màu tương phản)

       5. The colours run ( bay màu)

                 e.g: I put a red skirt in the washing machine with my white shirt and the colour ran.

 

  • LIGHT
  1. Pitch dark = very dark. ( cực kì tối)

                   e.g: I was afraid to go downstairs, the whole house was pitch dark, and very quiet.

      2. Tingled with gold: nhuốm vàng

      3. The glare of the sun: ánh sáng mặt trời

      4. A pinpoint/ray/beam of light: một điểm/tia/chùm sáng

      5. Faint glow: mờ nhạt.

                   e.g:  The faint glow of dawn was visible on the horizon.

 

    II/ IDIOMS

  1. In the black =  thành công hoặc có lợi nhuận

              e.g: Their company has been in the black ever since the new CEO took over, and changed it all around!

  1. out of the blue = bất ngờ

              e.g: Greg has decided to quit his job out of the blue, and go travelling for a year!

  1. black sheep = a person who is the ‘odd one out’ of a group, and doesn’t fit in with others around them.

              e.g: I have always been the black sheep in my family, I have a completely different personality to all of them, and we don’t even look the same!

  1. see someone’s true colours = hiểu được tính cách thật của ai đó ngay lần gặp đầu tiên

              e.g: I thought I knew her so well, but it was only until I asked her for the money she owed me that I saw her true colours.

  1. green with envy = ghen tỵ

               e.g: When we were children, my older brother always used to get green with envy if my dad bought something for me and not for him.

  1. in the pink of something = sức khỏe tốt

               e.g: My grandmother looked ever so well when I saw her, she was in the pink of condition.

  1. to be out of the red = thoát khỏi nợ nần

               e.g: Our company is finally out of the red now. We’ve managed to pay back our loan, and now we’re making profit!

  1. catch someone red-handed = bắt quả tang

              e.g: He kept lying to me about where he was going in the evenings, so yesterday I followed him and caught him red-handed. He was with another woman!

  1. a white lie = lời nói dối vô hại

              e.g: I just wanted to get out of work so I told my boss a little white lie, and said I had a doctor’s appointment.

  1. a grey area = cái gì đó không rõ ràng

              e.g: The law about re-using pictures from the Internet seems to be a grey area.

  1. green issues = vấn đề môi trường

              e.g: My brother cares a lot about green issues and has volunteered to do conversation work.

  1. blacken one’s name =  phá hủy danh tiếng của ai

             e.g: The Government tried to blacken his name because he was critical of their policies.

  1. shed/throw some light on = giải thích

             e.g: I’m hoping Hilary can shed some light on what happened at work yesterday

  1. cast a shadow over = ít vui vẻ hơn

             e.g: My sister’s illness cast a shadow over our New Year family reunion.

  1. to be under the shadow of = nhận được ít sự chú ý

             e.g: Jim has always been under the shadow of his super-intelligent sister.

 

  III/ QUESTION

  1. What’s your favourite colour? Are there any colours you dislike (Why?)
  2. When you are buying something, is the colour important to you?
  3. Do you usually wear clothes in your favourite colour?
  4. Do you prefer light or dark colours?
  5. Are there any colours that have a special meaning in your country?
  6. Do you think different types of people like different colours?
