Did you save money when you were a child?

Yes, when I was a child, my mom and dad gave me a lovely piggy bank to save money in it. Sometimes, on my birthdays or on the occasion of New year, relatives would give me a small amount of money. So, over a few years, this money would inevitably begin to pile up. Back then, saving money was a piece of cake. I only wish it was as easy these days. 

Should parents give children money? 

I think it’s okay for parents to regularly give their children a small amount of money. Not only does it grant the children some independence and sense of ownership, but it also allows them the opportunity to comprehend the value of money, and financial management at a young age.

What do people save money for? 

Well everyone saves money for their own personal reasons. For many, it is something big and significant in terms of social status such as a house or car. Saving money to fund your child’s education is also a pretty common goal for many parents. At the moment, a lot of my peers are saving money for grand and fancy weddings (lol). 

Have you ever received money as a gift? 

Yes, money is a common gift, especially for young people who are often struggling financially and are in need of a helping hand. For this reason, I usually receive money from my family on birthdays or other special occasions rather than any other kind of less practical gift. 

How can you teach children about the importance of saving money? 

Well, there are an abundance of ways we can help children realise the value of money and handwork. They need to fully aware that "money doesn’t grow on trees” and the best way for them to learn this is by not always giving them money for the things they want. I strongly believe that the idea of giving pocket money to children at the young age is a brilliant idea. Because they will know how to save money through first hand experience. 

Vocabulary highlights:

1. Piggy bank noun /ˈpɪɡ.i ˌbæŋk/ = a small container, sometimes in the shape of a pig, that is used by children for saving money: heo tiết kiệm
2. Relative noun /ˈrel.ə.tɪv/ = a member of your family: họ hàng

4. Piece of cake = something that is very easy to do: cực kì dễ

Example: The exam was a piece of cake.

5. Grant noun /ɡrɑːnt/ = an amount of moneygiven especially by the government to a person or organization for a special purpose: khoản trợ cấp

Example: They gave/awarded her a grant to study abroad for one year. (Họ đã cho / trao cho cô một khoản trợ cấp để đi du học trong một năm.)

6. Ownership noun /ˈəʊ.nə.ʃɪp/ = the fact that you own something: sự sở hữu, quyền sở hữu

Example: Rates of home ownership have remained relatively constant. (Tỷ lệ sở hữu nhà vẫn tương đối ổn định.)

7. Comprehend verb /ˌkɒm.prɪˈhend/ = to understand something completely: hiểu

Example: He doesn't seem to comprehend the scale of the problem (Anh ta dường như không hiểu quy mô của vấn đề)

8. In terms of/in ...Terms = used to describe which particular area of a subject you are discussing: khi nói về cái gì đó….

Example: In terms of money, I was better off in my last job. (Về tiền bạc, tôi đã khá hơn trong công việc cuối cùng của mình.)

9. Peer noun /pɪər/ = a person who is the same age or has the same social position or the same abilities as other people in a group: bạn cùng trang lứa

Example: Do you think it's true that teenage girls are less self-confident than their male peers? (Bạn có nghĩ rằng sự thật là các cô gái tuổi teen kém tự tin hơn so với các bạn nam?)

10. Abundance noun /əˈbʌn.dəns/ = the situation in which there is more than enough of something:

Example: There was an abundance of food at the wedding. (Có rất nhiều thức ăn trong đám cưới.)

11. Money doesn't grow on trees = said to warn someone to be careful how much moneythey spend, because there is only a limited amount: tiền không mọc trên cây ý nói bạn phải suy nghĩ, tiêu tiền cẩn thận, hợp lý

Example: ”Mum, I'd like a new bike." "i'll have to think about it - money doesn't grow on trees, you know!" (Mẹ ơi, con thích một chiếc xe đạp mới. "" Mẹ sẽ phải suy nghĩ về nó - tiền không mọc trên cây, con biết đấy!)
