How do you define volunteer work? 

I would define it simply as any kind of philanthropic work for which you do not get paid. The difference between volunteer work and any other kind of employment is that you do the tasks willingly without any financial incentive or hopes of economic gain. 

Would you like to work as a volunteer?

Absolutely yes! I am really into working as a volunteer for an organization related to education, because I do feel that this is something that every individual has a right to have, but very few are able to get the quality education. Hopefully, with my knowledge, I can help some unfortunate/underprivileged children to have a promising future. It’s also one of the best way to serve for the betterment of the community.

Have you ever done any volunteer work? 

Yes I’ve done quite a bit of volunteer work. My first experience of volunteering was when I spent time working at various music festivals. In exchange for a few hours working in the carpark, ticketing, or litter picking, I would have free access to the music venues and could see all the live music I wanted. When I discovered this opportunity, I was as happy as a clam. Over the last few years, I’ve also volunteered for various charities and development projects all over the country. 

Why did you do the volunteer work?

It has usually been for a combination of two reasons. Firstly, to gain experience in a particular professional field, but also in order to give back something positive to the community. Donating your time and energy as a volunteer is great for the particular project and it’s also a fantastic way to learn new skills such as team work, leadership skill and patience. You also have a golden opportunity to meet fascinating, like-minded people and so much more. 

Do you know any volunteers?

Yes, currently I’m in close contact with a group of volunteers who are campaigning to build clean water systems in remote areas of Vietnam. There are about 50 members of the team in total and together they focus on raising money to build new facilities as well as educating young people all over the country about the extreme importance of access to clean water. 

What could you do to help if you had no money?

Well, from my perspective, helping has nothing to do with money. There are an abundance of things we can help our community with our knowledge, experience, the things that we have learnt. It is great to be able to share your knowledge and for the one who receives it. It is surely a pure joy to know that you are helpful and can contribute something to make a better world.

Example: Tax incentives have been very effective in encouraging people to save and invest more of their income. (Ưu đãi thuế đã rất hiệu quả trong việc khuyến khích mọi người tiết kiệm và đầu tư nhiều hơn thu nhập của họ.)

5. Underprivileged adjective/ˌʌn.dəˈprɪv.əl.ɪdʒd/: without the money, possessions, education, opportunities, etc. that the average person has: kém may mắn (nghèo khó)

Example: Children from an underprivileged family background are statistically more likely to become involved in crime. (Trẻ em từ một gia đình kém may mắn có nhiều khả năng tham gia vào tội phạm.)

6. Betterment noun /ˈbet.ə.mənt/: improvement: sự cải thiện

Example: Several changes have been made for the betterment of the sport. (Một số thay đổi đã được thực hiện để cải thiện môn thể thao này.)

7. Promising adjective /ˈprɒm.ɪ.sɪŋ/: Something that is promising shows signs that it is going to be successful or enjoyable: đầy hứa hẹn, triển vọng

Example: It's a great restaurant but it doesn't look at all promising from the outside.

8. in exchange (for sth)= given because of something that has been given to you: để đổi lấy cái gì đó

Example: The group sold half of its London casino business in exchange for shares. (Tập đoàn này đã bán một nửa doanh nghiệp sòng bạc ở London để đổi lấy cổ phiếu.)

9. As happy as a clam= Very happy and content.

Example: It never occurred to him to be discontented... He was as happy as a clam."

10. Donate verb/dəʊˈneɪt/: to give money or goods to help a person or organization: quyên góp

Example: Please donate generously.

11. Like-minded adjective/ˌlaɪkˈmaɪn.dɪd/: People who are described as like-minded share the same opinions, ideas, or interests: những người có cùng sở thích, chí hướng

Example: A dedicated football fan herself, she started the magazine for like-minded women.

12. Contribute verb /kənˈtrɪb.juːt/: to give something, especially money, in order to provide or achieve something together with other people: đóng góp

Example: Her family has contributed $50,000 to the fund (Gia đình cô đã đóng góp 50.000 đô la vào quỹ)
