This topic doesn't really ticket my fancy" hay "This topic doesn't float my boat" ^^.
Do you consider archaeology to be an important science?
Yes, very much so! Archaeology offers a glimpse into the past in a way that history books simply can’t. It makes history tangible and enables us to literally touch the past when we handle artefacts that have been uncovered after thousands of years. It also helps us understand the ways in which human civilisation has changed (and not changed) over time, giving us a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. Archaeology has helped us understand more about the agricultural revolution, the emergence of cities, as well as the collapse of ancient civilizations and empires.
Should artifacts be kept in the museums of the country they belong to?
This is a very conscientious issue, with valid arguments on both sides. On the one hand, it’s easy to say, yes, of course artefacts should belong to and be housed within the country of their origin. It is their history, and it is also their right to profit from the tourism that these artefacts generate. However, in some circumstances, a case can also be made for items of historical significance to be held in alternative countries for the sake of preservation. Take the Elgin marbles for example. It is widely believed that the climate and air pollution in Athens would quicken the decay of these priceless sculptures. Or we can look at the museums in Syria that were pillaged and destroyed during the recent conflicts. Those exhibits could have been saved if they were stored safely in a country free from the threat of war.
What would be the archaeological items associated with our generation?
It’s difficult to know exactly what will be preserved hundreds of years from now but I think the most obvious and the most depressing answer would be objects made from plastic. The detrimental effects that single use plastics have had on the environment means that before long we will stop using them. However, their extreme durability means that they will surely litter the earth thousands of years from now. This means that plastics will forever be associated with the few generations, including our own, that have used them.
