B- Describe a national festival in your country.

1- What is the most important festival in your country?

Our most important festival is, without doubt, Christmas. We all look forward to it for months, buying presents for our loved ones and decorating our homes. It's magical for everyone but for children especially. When we knew Father Christmas was about to visit, my sister Samantha an I were always too excited to sleep.

2- Do you think this festival will still be as important in the future?

Yes, I think so. I think people often forget the true meaning of Christmas, though - I mean, they don't think about the story of the birth of Jesus - and in the future, they'll probably remember it even less. They see it more as a time for buying and receiving presents.

3- Tell me about how weddings are celebrated in your country

Well, the wedding party is the most interesting bit. After the ceremony, everyone has a huge meal and then dances all night, sometimes to traditional music played by a band, sometimes just to pop music played by a D.J. I prefer the traditional music because you can hear pop music any time, the old, traditional songs have so much meaning and history behind them. The older generation always know all the words, so they sing along!

4- What are some forms of traditional dancing in your country?

Folk dancing is quite popular, even among young people. The dancers wear traditional costume, which looks beautiful. My favorite is a circle dance performed by women, but there's also a marching dance and a couple dance. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the choreography of these dances. I just know I like watching them.

Sample answer 1:

New Year day is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in our country. This is the occasion that people celebrates with great joy, hope, festivity and different cultural and other programs.

New Year is the time when a new calendar year begins and the year count is incremented. According to Gregorian calendar, this festival falls on the first January each year.
People start the arrangement to celebrate this festival about one week prior to the 1st January. On the 31st night, people gather together, eat western foods and sometimes the traditional foods, make prayer for the prosperity of for the New Year and stay awake till late night to enjoy the night.

In my country, people groom well in the first January. To some extend people believe that the first January is important to them as it the starting of a new year. They believe that, remaining happy, eating good foods and wearing nice clothes would make them happy and prosperous for the whole year.

People greet others, give and receive gifts, visit the amusement parks and do many other activities. Some fares held on for the occasion and a great gathering is observed there. So of the big trade fares, book fares starts on the 1st day of the year.

This is an important festival for us. We along with the whole world take this day as an important festival day. In our tradition, we start the year with the hope of eliminating the bitterness and failure of the past year and start a fresh year with the hope of fortune and happiness.

Sample answer 2:

Traditional festivals and celebrations always play a significant role in Vietnamese culture. Besides Tet festival, the biggest and the most important celebration for Vietnamese people, the Mid-Autumn Festival, or also known as the Moon Festival or the Children's Festival, is also a special time in the year. It's usually held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Vietnamese lunar calendar.

This special celebration is mostly embraced by children as they will have an opportunity to dress in beautiful clothes with attractive and colorful lanterns of various sizes, shapes and designs in their hands, ready for a grand procession around their neighborhood. Traditionally, lanterns signify the wish for the light and warmth. The adults also feel extremely happy as they see the radiant look on their little angels' faces in the parades.

However, the Mid-Autumn Festival is more like an occasion for outdoor reunions among friends and relatives to eat mooncakes and watch the moon, a symbol of harmony and unity. This is also a special time for the traditional values and precious memories and life stories to be shared and handed / passed down from generation to generation. Performances of dragon and lion dances are also a familiar sight on the streets when the moon is full.

I really enjoy this traditional festival as this is the chance for me as well as other adults to relive our treasured childhood and a great occasion to strengthen our family ties and help the younger people to better cherish the important cultural values.

D- Describe a festival that is important in your country

You should say:

When the festival occurs
What you did during it
What you like or dislike about it
And explain why this festival is important

Answer:

I think the main festival in my country is Christmas, which is in late December. The main day that is celebrated in the UK is Christmas Day, on 25th December, though we also have the day off the following day, on Boxing Day, when many people visit friends and extended family.

I spent last Christmas with my family, and will also spend this one there too. We all get together at my parents’ house, because it is large enough to host everyone. On Christmas morning, we start preparing the meal, as it takes a long time to cook. We put the turkey or goose in the oven, and then some of us go to church for a Christmas mass. The rest of us stay behind to carry on cooking. At around midday, we gather round the Christmas tree, which is decorated with baubles, tinsel, and fairy lights, and we open our presents, which are all placed under the tree the night before. After that we have our Christmas dinner, which is always the same meal as it is a traditional feast.

I love nearly everything about Christmas. There is a sense of anticipation and excitement in the period leading up to Christmas, and then during the festival itself, families and friends spend time together and most people have time off work. One thing I don’t like about Christmas is that it is very commercialized, and it can be stressful getting ready for it!

This festival is important for many people, even for non-Christians. Many non-Christian people in the UK enjoy the festive season without attaching any religious significance to it. It is our only national holiday involving resting, feasting and the giving of gifts, and I think such times nurture our souls.
