Let’s talk about family relationships:

Do you think it is important to spend time with family?

Absolutely yes. I am a firm believer that family time is crucial. My family always make sure that we never take our love for each other for granted. Every Sunday, in fact, everyone in the family tries our best to make time for family gatherings. We often have nice long meals with good food, good wine and a few jokes for dessert. The collaboration of everybody ideas, skills and enthusiasm insists that the flavours all sing in great harmony. 

Vocabulary highlights:

1. Absolutely yes - chắc chắn là có rồi ạ
2. A firm believer -1 người tin tưởng chắc chắn rằng
3. Never take our love for each other for granted -không bao giờ được xem thường tình yêu của chúng tôi dành cho nhau
4. Take sth or sbfor granted  = If you take situations or people for granted, you do not realize or show that you are grateful for how much you get from them- xem thường/ coi cái gì đó là đương nhiên
5. Example: One of the problemswith relationships is that after a while you just take each other for granted.- Một trong những vấn đề của những mối quan hệ đó chính là sau 1 thời gian, bạn thường không trân trọng nó nữa.
6. Family gatherings - các cuộc họp mặt gia đình. 
7. Have nice long meals with good food, good wine and a few jokes for dessert - có những bữa ăn dài tuyệt vời với thức ăn ngon, rượu ngon và một vài câu chuyện cười cho món tráng miệng
8. Sing in great harmony - đều hòa hợp tuyệt vời.

 

How important is it to keep a familytogether?

I have been always taught that “Blood is thicker than water”. Your family will be there for you through thick and thin, whereas friends definitely come and go (which I can tell you through personal experience). It should be on everyone’s top priority in life to maintain and strive for a loving and healthy relationship with their family. I believe this can provide positivity in other aspects in life, too.

Vocabulary highlights:

1. Blood is thicker than water - said to emphasize that you believe that familyconnections are always more important than other types of relationship - Một giọt máu đào hơn ao nước lã.
2. Through thick and thin = through ups and downs - qua những giai đoạn thăng trầm  = If you support or stay with someone through thick and thin, you always support or stay with them, even if there are problems or difficulties
3. Example: She has stuckwith me through thick and thin.- cô ấy luôn ở bên tôi kể cả những lúc thăng và trầm.
4. Come and go = to existor happen somewhere for a short time and then go away- đến rồi đi
5. Example: The feelingof nausea comes and goes.
6. Personal experience - trải nghiệm cá nhân
7. Top priority- ưu tiên hàng đầu
8. Strive fora loving and healthy relationship - Phấn đấu/ cố gắng vì một mối quan hệ yêu thương và lành mạnh
9. Provide positivity- đem lại sự lạc quan 
10. Aspects in life - các khía cạnh trong cuộc sống

What relationships do younger and older people have in your culture? 

Sample answer 1:(Western culture)

I feel that nowadays, there is a lot more separation and segregation between the older and younger generation. When I visit other countries,  such as Asia in particular, I witness a lot more unity between older and younger people. One blatant example of this is when a family member gets sick or too old, they are kept under the family’s wing until the end. Whereas, in my country, they would be kept in a nursing home or in a hospital, which is very sad. So, in my culture, the relationship seems a bit scared between the younger and older generation. 

Sample answer 1:(Asian culture)

For the most part, the elderly in my country continue to be treated with respect and admiration. However, it can be argued that the rapidly changing nature of society means that some traditional values get ignored. With the hustle and bustle of life, people spend most of their time to provide money for the family so it is can be easy to neglect older relatives. Old people in general can often feel cut-off from modern life. 

Vocabulary highlights:

1. Separation and segregation- sự tách biệt và chia cách
2. One blatant example of this is-Một ví dụ rõ ràng về điều này là 
3. A nursing home- nhà dưỡng lão
4. In my culture - trong nền văn hoá của tôi
5. Seems a bit scared - dường như có vẻ đáng sợ 1 chút
6. For the most part- hầu hết
7. Respect and admiration-tôn trọng và ngưỡng mộ. 
8. Traditional values- các giá trị truyền thống
9. With the hustle and bustle of life-với nhịp sống hối hả
10. Provide money for the family- chu cấp tiền cho gia đình
11. Feel cut-off- cảm thấy bị lạc lõng, tách biệt

 

How has it changed compared to the past?

Sample answer 1:

As I briefly mentioned earlier, there has been a huge change in the recent years with regards to relationships with elderly people. In today’s world, I feel the younger generations are more rebellious, less disciplined and easily swayed. On the contrary, in the old days, there seemed to be much more serious punishments and also general respect towards the elders. 

Sample answer 2:

I would definitely say that families have become more widely dispersed and less close these days compared to the past. People travel more, and then end up living far away from their families. I think this is a shame because it means there is a breakdown of communities. I also think that in Western countries, because families are spread over a wider geographical area, elderly people tend to be forgotten and usually live on their own.
